Consumer Headaches Resulting from Debit Card Holds

If you are tight on your checking account balance, you may want to think twice about using your debit card for certain purchases.

After a debit card is swiped for payment, certain retailers like hotels, gas stations and car rentals, sometimes place a hold or a block on money from the account in order to secure the payment, protecting the money from any other use. This reduces the risk that the customer will be overdrawn and leave the merchant unpaid.

The hold can even be for more than the amount of payment. For example, some hotels put a hold on 120% of the cost of your room. If the cost is $100, that’s a $120 hold on your account. It holds the cost plus the additional amount to cover any incidentals expenses that may occur during the …

Girl Scouts of Greater New York Honor This Year’s Women of Distinction

On November 3rd, the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York will be honoring five women who inspire through their leadership and encourage girls and women to aim high to achieve their goals at their Women of Distinction Breakfast event. The achievements of the women honored at the Women of Distinction Breakfast represent diverse paths of achievement and the fulfillment of the Girl Scout Promise. This event takes place every year during the fall season with former honorees including Maria Bartiromo, Christine Quinn and Vera Wang, among many others. In addition to successful and inspiring women, the Women of Distinction Breakfast also honors one extraordinary Girl Scout each year; a girl who represents the ideals inherent in Girl Scouting with the “Future Woman of Distinction Award.”
