6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chile

Chile earthquake On late Sunday, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Chile, saturating phone lines in the area of Calama.

No injuries or potential damage from the earthquake have been reported. The most damage that is said to have occurred because of the earthquake is the country’s economy that has seen a rise since its recovery from the global financial crisis which peaked at the end of 2009.

Calama is one of the country’s most popular tourist centers and is also one of the driest locations in the world, located in the middle of the Atacama desert. While the earthquake’s strength is said to have been “medium strength”, it is being said that the situation in Chile has normalized.

Back at the end of February, a 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile which sparked a huge tsunami, killing 521 people, sweeping away entire villages and causing somewhere around $30 billion in damage. Luckily, Sunday’s earthquake was not as massive as the one that struck in February and Miguel Ortiz, the shift manager at Chile’s National Emergency Office said that because the most-recent earthquake hit very close to Argentine territory, ruling out the possibility of a tsunami being caused by the earthquake.
