Projects Abroad Offers Accessible Gap Year Volunteering Options for Anyone

Taking a gap year before embarking onto the next stage of their academic careers is an increasingly popular trend for North American high school graduates. Some, like Malia Obama, are even deferring their college enrollment to do so. With volunteer organization Projects Abroad, a global leader in short-term international volunteer programs, bridging high school and college with a gap year is an option that can still help make a difference around the world for anyone eager to experience it.

Typically, a gap year can take place over a full year, a semester, or even just a month or two spent fulfilling an inner calling before heading back to the classroom. Volunteering abroad is just one meaningful way to spend a gap year, and it’s an option that offers several benefits, says Elizabeth Cauchois, a Program Advisor for Projects Abroad USA.

“Students taking their gap years in developing countries find that their experience as volunteers impacts them significantly. They devote their time, energy, and skills to helping others, learning about cultural exchange firsthand by living and working in local communities, and exploring the world. This gives them a measure of independence and maturity that few other experiences can, and many students feel more confident and prepared for their impending studies. A well-planned gap year can make all the difference.”

Projects Abroad has more than one option for gap year students. Global Gap is a pre-designed gap year volunteering program for a group of students to volunteer together throughout the course of an academic year (eight months). The group travels together to five countries — Ghana, South Africa, Peru, Nepal, and Thailand — to participate in a wide variety of volunteer projects and internships, such as helping local teachers improve their English and learning new classroom management techniques.

Students can also customize their gap year by participating on standard projects of their choice. They can choose exactly what they want to do, where they want to go, how long they want to go for, and when they want to start. This gives gap year students enormous freedom when planning their gap year and their travels can take them across the globe.

“A gap year is accessible to everyone,” Cauchois emphasizes. “We have a number of projects that are available on a budget, but that still offer safety and are well-coordinated. Volunteering abroad is possible on any budget and we are always happy to speak to and advise students who are looking to make their trip a reality.”

A gap year is an experience for anyone, and there are various ways to go about planning a year focused on traveling and volunteering. Learn more about gap year volunteering with Projects Abroad.

What’s Coming to and Leaving Netflix May 2016

Fans of quirky comedies might be disappointed to see Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Clerks removed from Netflix in the next month. But the good news is that Maria Bamford’s new show, Lady Dynamite, begins streaming on May 20, and if you ask her, she’s probably not supposed to be here today, either.

Lady Dynamite
Netflix

Lady Dynamite is a “mockumentary” that, like much of her comedy career, delves into the details of her personal life — her career as a comedian and burgeoning actress; her sometimes weird, but overwhelmingly supportive relationship with her family, especially her parents; and the unique challenges she faces as a person living with a mental illness.

Lady Dynamite is the second Netflix/Maria Bamford collaboration. The first was The Special Special Special, a gleeful and oh-so-awkward 49-minute stand-up comedy show shot in Bamford’s own living room with a two person audience: her parents. Remember that weird, but overwhelmingly supportive relationship we mentioned? This is one definite example of that. If you haven’t seen The Special Special Special, we urge you to queue it up ASAP. She orders pizza and burns a batch of cookies in the middle of the show. Yes, really. We’re going to go out on a limb and say that Bamford’s parents are likely ecstatic that Lady Dynamite will feature actors portraying them instead of playing themselves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gSxKR0Cirs

This is the true story of a woman who loses — and then finds — her shit.

Lady Dynamite is a 12-episode half-hour comedy from Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development) and Pam Brady (South Park) starring comedian-actress Maria Bamford. Based on what she has accepted to be “her life,” the semi-autobiographical, semi-surreal series is a truthful look at the highs and lows of Bamford’s life — as an actor on the rise, during her hospitalization for bipolar disorder, and through her present life in LA, where she’s reached a middle ground and found love.

Here’s the full list of what’s coming to the streaming service and what will be leaving in May.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ ‘Moana’ Finds Her Voice in Auli’i Cravalho

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana has found her voice following a worldwide search to cast the film’s title character. Native Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, 14, joins Dwayne Johnson in the big-screen adventure about a spirited and fearless teenager named Moana (voice of Cravalho) who, with help from demi-god Maui (voice of Johnson), sets out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder.

While hundreds of talented people from across the Pacific Islands were eager to try out for the role, Cravalho set her sights firmly on her sophomore year of high school. “I didn’t think I would have a chance,” she said. “When I was little, I used to dance around the house singing at the top of my lungs. In my mind, that was performing and I loved the feeling of it. But I never imagined being in a Disney movie, being Moana — representing my culture in that way.”

Fortunately, the film’s Hawaii casting director remembered an unrelated audition Cravalho did as part of an a cappella group, which had been submitted for a talent showcase for a charity. Feeling the local teen would be perfect for the Disney role, she tracked her and her mother down and invited Cravalho to audition. “Her audition was fantastic — she was such a raw talent,” said producer Osnat Shurer. “Auli’i was among a small number of girls we brought back for a second round of auditions. Then we flew her and her mom over to audition at our studios in Burbank.”

“Auli’i demonstrated a certain fearlessness in her auditions and call-backs,” said director John Musker. “She has a playful, mischievous wit. She can project vulnerability, she doesn’t seem intimidated at all by the challenges ahead, and her Polynesian background has helped shape her connection to family, hard work, and music. These are all qualities she shares with Moana.”

“Moana is a vibrant, tenacious 16-year-old growing up on an island where voyaging is forbidden,” added director Ron Clements. “But Moana has been drawn to the ocean since she can remember and is desperate to find out what’s beyond the confines of her island.”

Auli’i Cravalho has already started recording for the role, and Moana sails into U.S. theaters November 23.

How Volunteers are Making a Difference for Animal Welfare

(BPT) – When you come home from work, he’s always there to greet you. When you need extra motivation to work out, he’s happy to join for a walk. When you’ve had a bad day, he can sense it and is quick to give you a loving nuzzle. Pets provide endless joy to their families, but for millions of shelter animals, each day is a test of patience in hopes of finding a forever home.

Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide every year, according to the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) statistics. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. These numbers underscore the massive need for volunteers to provide the necessary care to ensure as many pets as possible can be placed in safe, loving homes.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any shelter, and it’s a true community effort to keep animals healthy and safe. The Dumb Friends League — Denver’s largest animal shelter dedicated to giving a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves — depended on 1,418 volunteers who donated 211,307 hours of service last fiscal year to help needy animals in Colorado. That’s the equivalent of 101 full-time employees worth $4.7 million in donated time.

This is just one example of the impact volunteers make in the estimated 13,600 shelters nationwide.

In addition to volunteers, support from a variety of businesses and corporations helps keep shelters running strong. Hill’s Pet Nutrition, for example, is one of the largest donors of food to shelters across the country. In fact, Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love® program has provided more than $280 million worth of food to more than 1,000 shelters since its inception in 2002.

Both volunteers and Hill’s share the common goal of transforming the lives of homeless pets. To recognize the vital contribution of shelter volunteers, Hill’s has launched an initiative this year to bring volunteers long overdue recognition. Hill’s has created a contest, Hill’s Shelter Heroes, to recognize the amazing volunteers who continue to go above and beyond in their commitment to shelter pets.

One of the recent winners, Annie Hughes with Wayside Waifs in Kansas City, who has dedicated more than 7,279 hours to her shelter, wanted to express her appreciation to Hill’s for creating a program that “allowed her to share her passion for helping sheltered animals.” Hughes’ submission, along with the rest of the 10 finalists, can be seen at Hill’s Shelter Hero Contest page.

It’s apparent that caring for shelter animals is a group effort, yet one person can make a big difference to help save lives. If you want to change the world for animals in need, here are some tips for becoming a volunteer.

  1. Reach out to local shelters. Call your local animal shelter or rescue group to see if they are accepting volunteers.
  2. Think about your interests and skills. Caring for animals one-on-one is a popular shelter activity, but there are so many more opportunities for volunteers. Whether you’re able to foster in your home, offer professional skills in administration departments, or serve as an adoption counselor to new pet parents, volunteer options are truly endless.
  3. Spread the love. Once you find your volunteer home, spread the love to help pets find homes and encourage friends to volunteer. By sharing posts on social media like the #HillsShelterHeroes contest, hosting fundraising events, and simply bragging about that adorable new pooch to your friends, you’re helping to open everyone’s eyes to the growing need for volunteers at shelters and the importance of pet adoption.

The Healthy Hair Diet

You are what you eat. “Taking vitamins is a great way to help make your hair fuller and grow faster. But while you’re patiently waiting, a change in your diet can make a huge difference and even help expedite the process,” explains Carla Rivas, hairstylist and co-founder of the all-natural hair growth vitamins Hair La Vie.

“Any foods that would make you break out, such as those filled with sugars and grease are going to cause a buildup on your scalp that’s going to affect the way your hair feels, looks, and grows. Anything that irritates your skin (think ice cream) will bother your scalp, which can damage your hair follicle. A damaged hair follicle will either grow weak hair or not grow hair at all.”

Here are the top foods to enjoy and stay away from in order to maintain a healthy hair diet.

Top Food Don’ts for Healthy Hair

Sweet Treats

Sugary foods like your favorite candies or cupcakes cause your insulin level to rise, which also causes an increase in androgen (a male hormone) in your body. This hormone is known for causing hair follicles to shrink and become irritated. This leads to hair thinning and hair loss.

Greasy Foods

The grease from fatty meats like fried chicken and french fries can cause more secretion on the scalp. Also, a lot of the time after eating greasy foods, people touch their face and hair without washing their hands. This causes both acne and damage to the hair. You need a clean, debris-free scalp or your hair will not grow healthy and your follicle could be damaged.

Salty Foods

Think chips and canned/frozen meals. Consuming a lot of salty meals and snacks will dry your hair out and leave it weak, lifeless, and breaking.

chips

Low Protein, Filler Foods

Starches like pasta and a lot of cereals, which can be low in protein, will leave your hair limp and unhealthy. That bounce and shine most ladies want is not possible without a healthy dose of protein.

Top Food Do’s for Healthy Hair

People should be eating nutrient and antioxidant rich foods, like fruits and vegetables, if they want to grow long, healthy hair — and a strong, healthy body. These foods help hydrate your scalp and strengthen your hair.

Eggs

Eggs contain the healthy doses of protein, zinc, and iron that your hair and body need. Zinc benefits for hair include promotion of cell reproduction, tissue growth, and repair of broken tissues. It also maintains the oil-secreting glands that are attached to your hair follicles, thus decreasing their chances of falling out.

tomato

Tomatoes

Tomatoes have antioxidants that aid in scalp circulation. A healthy scalp leads to happy hair. Add them to a salad or mix them into your favorite dish for a pop of color and tons of fresh flavor.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is an amazing source of protein, vitamin B5, and vitamin D. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is great for keeping the scalp clean and free from film and debris. This keeps the follicles from becoming irritated and promotes healthy, strong hair growth. Add fruit, nuts, and granola for an energizing midday snack.

Lean Protein

Your hair is made of protein, so it only makes sense that your hair will benefit from opting for healthy lean protein sources like grilled chicken or baked salmon. If your diet lacks protein, your body will begin rationing the protein left, which will lead to hair loss. Protein also has the iron you need for healthier, beautiful hair.

INFOGRAPHIC: What Mom Really Wants for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is May 8, which means it is only a matter of time before you’re scrambling to find that last-minute gift or seeking a good enough card in an entirely picked-over greeting card aisle.

We have been celebrating Mother’s Day for over 102 years, since it became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. In all that time, we as a society have concluded that the very best gifts for the most influential women in our lives on their special day are greeting cards and flowers. This year, DealsPlus.com, an online community of bargain hunters, did some digging of their own to help us all make better Mother’s Day gift-giving decisions. Their resource concluded with some interesting stats about how people are planning to shop for their Mother’s Day gifts, how much they will typically spend, and most importantly, what moms really want.

The following Mother’s Day infographic is DealPlus.com’s step-by-step resource to going beyond greeting cards and flowers and really impressing the most important women in your life on Mother’s Day.
