5 Reasons to Intern on a Public Health Project

In many of the countries that international volunteer organization Projects Abroad works in, basic primary healthcare infrastructure cannot support the demands of the population. To ease the pressure on these services, it is vital to prevent disease at a community level by providing basic treatments and diagnoses. This, along with improving the overall health of local communities, is a priority of each Public Health Project run by the organization.

Here are the top five reasons to get involved at a Public Health Project.

1. Provide Primary Medical Care Where it is Needed

Accessing medical care and treatment can be difficult for underprivileged communities and at-risk groups. Public Health interns take on an important role in these communities by working with local medical professionals to provide basic care. This can include cleaning and bandaging minor wounds, testing blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and testing for illnesses like malaria. This has an immediate effect on communities — not only do doctors, nurses, and interns treat any immediate symptoms as best they can, they can help people get further medical care at a hospital or clinic if needed.

2. Contribute to Long Term Impact

While local medical staff and interns can provide immediate treatment, Public Health Projects also focus on prevention and causes of illnesses. By educating communities on how to prevent illnesses and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), interns ensure that they have the knowledge to pass on to others and future generations. This is especially important considering the increasing prevalence of conditions like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Public Health interns regularly contribute to health campaigns, such as the larviciding campaign held last year to help prevent the spread of Dengue fever in the Philippines.

3. Enhance Personal Medical Knowledge

Public Health interns learn various practical skills for their resumes during their placements and working alongside local medical professionals also gives interns the opportunity to improve their medical knowledge. Projects Abroad encourages interns to ask questions and take notes every day, particularly when observing illnesses and conditions not usually seen in North America.

4. Experience Cross-Cultural Exchange

One of the main motivations for volunteering and interning abroad is to immerse yourself in the culture where you will be working. Interning on a Public Health Project is a fantastic way to do this. Not only do interns work directly in the community every day, they also live with local host families. Having an understanding and respect for different cultures and mindsets is an extremely valuable skill to have, especially in the healthcare field.

5. Stand Out From the Crowd

Medical school admissions are tough! Participating on a Public Health Project shows that you are prepared to challenge yourself, you are passionate about healthcare, and are committed to helping those in need. Internships also give applicants relevant experience to talk about during interviews.

Projects Abroad offers Public Health Projects in five destinations in the developing world. These programs typically run from one to four weeks or more at any time of the year. Start dates are flexible and participants can choose when they depart and return. The organization also offers Public Health placements for university students over spring break and for high school students during the summer.

About Projects Abroad

Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 by Dr. Peter Slowe, a geography professor, as a program for students to travel and work while on break from full-time study. The program had its genesis in post-USSR Romania, where students were given the chance to teach conversational English. After a few years just sending volunteers to Eastern Europe for teaching, the company expanded to sending volunteers of all ages around the world on a wide range of projects.

Projects Abroad is a global leader in short-term international volunteer programs with projects in 30 countries and recruitment offices in the UK, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Holland, Hong Kong, Norway, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, and the United States.

Benedict Cumberbatch is Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ — Watch the First Teaser Trailer

Marvel’s Doctor Strange is one of this year’s most anticipated comic adaptations. Though the movie doesn’t hit theaters until November 4, Marvel has just released the very first teaser trailer.

After his career is destroyed, a brilliant but arrogant and conceited surgeon gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under their wing and trains him to defend the world against evil. Witness the power of the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One.

Drew Barrymore and Princess Elsa ‘Let it Go’ in Mother Daughter Yoga Class

Drew Barrymore may be in the midst of a divorce, but it looks like her three-year-old daughter, Olive, is showing her how to “let it go.”

The incredibly cool mother-of-two recently took to Instagram to share an adorable bonding moment with her eldest daughter at a Mommy and Me yoga class. While Drew sported typical fitness apparel, it was Olive who stood out sporting Princess Elsa’s famous blue dress from Frozen. Celebrity parents: they too give into their children’s demands to attend events in-costume.

This candid look at Barrymore’s family life comes just days after she and husband Will Kopelman released a joint statement emphasizing the importance of prioritizing their children during the process of their divorce.

“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family. Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on,” Barrymore and Kopelman told People magazine. “Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.”

It looks like Drew Barrymore is doing just that.

DIY Beauty Recipe: Shea Butter Flower Bath Bombs

Sometimes all you need after a long day is some time to yourself so that you may gather your thoughts and prepare to seize another day, and there’s pretty much no better place to do that than in a relaxing bath. The bathtub is almost a universal symbol of sweet relief for women — the place where we can hope to catch a few moments of peace and quiet and just be, at least for a little while.

Not only can a hot bath rejuvenate your mental well-being, it can also work some serious magic on your skin. Lifestyle expert Jasmine Stringer of has created an awesome Shea butter bath bombs recipe we’re thrilled to be able to share with you. If winter dried out your skin, you’re going to want to take the afternoon to whip up these ultra-moisturizing little beauties!

Shea Butter Flower Bath Bombs Recipe

What You’ll Need:

flower measuring spoons

  1. To make these bath bombs successfully, it is important to have your ingredients measured out and ready to mix, so do that first.
  2. Combine and stir the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, and powdered milk in a medium-sized bowl. Set aside.
  3. Melt the Shea butter along with the oil and honey in a small pot over low heat.
  4. Add the melted ingredients to the dry mixture and whisk until thoroughly combined. For an enhanced spa feel and fragrance, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Mix well.
  5. The ingredients should begin to hold together. Working quickly, use your hands to press the mix firmly into the plastic sheet mold. Leave the mixture in the mold for a couple of minutes and then pop out. The easiest way to work with plastic candy sheet molds for this recipe is to put a cookie sheet over the tray, flip the tray over, and then lift the mold off. While one tray is drying, work on the next.
  6. Let the bath bombs dry overnight. The next day, place them in a decorative bag or basket and place them in your bathroom. To use, drop 1 or 2 bombs into your tub and let the tranquility wash over you — and moisturize you in the process!

You can also turn this mixture into a loose bath powder. Simply leave the mixture in your mixing bowl for 24 hours and periodically mix the ingredients to break up the clumps. Once all of the moisture is gone, place the powder into a mason jar. For a decorative touch, tie a colorful ribbon that matches your bathroom theme or colors around the jar.

Alex is Alive, Piper is in Trouble in ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Season 4 Promo Photos

When we last saw the ladies of Litchfield Penitentiary, we were left with two starkly different scenarios unfolding and some very important questions. While most of the inmates were enjoying a little taste of freedom splashing around in a nearby lake after running through a hole in the prison’s fencing, some serious chaos was ensuing elsewhere.

Orange Is the New Black doesn’t return to Netflix until June, but some very small hints have been released that honestly just leave us with more questions. Take a look at the recently-released Orange Is the New Black season 4 promo photos and let us know your predictions!

Alex is Alive

OITNB season 4 Alex

The last time we saw Alex, she had been left alone in the greenhouse and was cornered by one of Kubra’s henchmen who had just gotten a job at Litchfield as a guard so that he could (presumably) track Alex down and kill her. This picture has given us some hope that maybe Alex survived her attack and isn’t bleeding out on the greenhouse floor to be found later.

Pennsatucky and Big Boo are Still BFFs

OITNB season 4 Pennsatucky and Big Boo

The friendship that Pennsatucky and Big Boo have formed is one of the most unexpected friendships in Litchfield, but we kind of love them together.

Litchfield Gets Their Own Martha Stewart

OITNB season 4 Judy King

Judy King, star of the fictional cooking TV series, Judy King at Home, is arrested for tax evasion and, last we saw, had arrived at Litchfield to self-surrender. It looks like she is settled in here and striking up a friendship with Poussey.

Poor Sophia

OITNB season 4 Sophia

Sophia is still in solitary confinement. Ugh.

Kitchen Crew Power Struggle

OITNB season 4 kitchen crew

Red hasn’t won back control of the kitchen she once called her own… yet, anyway.

Don’t Spill the Beans

OITNB season 4 Suzanne

It looks like Taystee and Black Cindy are trying to keep Suzanne quiet about something. What kind of scheme could they have going on?

Inspection Time

OITNB season 4 inspection

Is Suzanne just being her normal, paranoid self, or could this inspection have something to do with what might have been happening with her, Taystee, and Black Cindy?

The Inmates Take a Stand

OITNB season 4

Something seems to have universally ruffled the feathers of everyone enough for them to take a stand together as one.

Piper is in Trouble

OITNB season 4 Piper

Piper has obviously pissed off the wrong person and might be getting branded for it. What is even happening here?

Orange Is the New Black season 4 begins streaming on Netflix June 17.

What Was Jesus Like as a Boy? — ‘The Young Messiah’ Movie Ticket Giveaway [Closed]

The materials featured in this post and giveaway were provided by Ribbow Media Group. This post may contain affiliate links. No incentive was provided for this publication and opinions are our own. Woman Tribune is not responsible for prize fulfillment.

What kind of woman was Mary? What must have gone through her mind when God appeared to her and blessed her with the birth of a son named Jesus, and did she have doubts? What kind of husband was Joseph; did he struggle with accepting Jesus as his own child? How did the couple approach parenting their young son, and how did they explain his role in the world when he began to realize that something may be a little different about him?

These are the questions The Young Messiah, in theaters now, aims to explore in a fresh take on the traditional story of Jesus, the son of God. Inspired by scripture and rooted in history, this story imagines a year in the boyhood of Jesus.

Remaining true to the character of Jesus revealed in the Bible, The Young Messiah is an inspirational story about the childhood of the savior for the whole family.

When the mystery of Jesus’ divinity begins to unfold in his early years, he turns to his parents for answers. But Mary and Joseph, in an effort to protect their child, are afraid to reveal all they know. How do you explain the ways of the world to its creator? How do you teach the teacher? How do you help the savior who came to save you?

Follow the young Messiah as he and his family take the extraordinary journey from Egypt to Nazareth and on to Jerusalem — where his true identity and profound destiny are revealed.

The Young Messiah

The Young Messiah reveals how Mary and Joseph, in their hearts, were just parents trying to do the best they could by the tremendous gift they were given in Jesus — not unlike any parent today faced with difficult decisions on what’s best for their child and the responsibility to protect and support them.

Watch the Parenting featurette below to find out why the filmmakers feel the importance of connecting with the Holy Family, and why they are relatable in today’s parenting world.

‘The Young Messiah’ Movie Ticket Giveaway

The Young Messiah is in theaters now and we are giving one lucky winner two AMC movie theater tickets. We hope it’s an extra special way you and your family can celebrate Easter this year.

This giveaway is open to US entrants ages 18+ and ends March 24, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
