Naturally, like just about every other popular activity and subject that urges people to need to know each and every possible thing there is to know about it, Pinterest now has its own For Dummies book. It’s official, guys, Pinterest has arrived, and the time to hop on that bandwagon is now.

Pinterest For Dummies was written by an innovative and just plain awesome woman who is part of a group of people who have the potential to benefit greatly from the magic that is Pinterest: bloggers. Kelby Carr is the founder and CEO of Type-A-Parent, a popular social network and blog, and the Type-A-Parent Conference, which I annually hear tons of terrific things about. Her penning this how-to book makes absolute perfect sense.

I thought I had Pinterest pretty much figured out, and to my credit, I do know what I’m doing when it comes to working the website properly. I can pin images, repin images, I know about the comment capability that almost no one uses, and I know that the like button exists, which I have come to realize through my usage of the website, is used by people who are too embarrassed or lazy to repin an image but still want to make sure people know that they were there. It was while reading this book, however, that I realized I could use a few pointers when it comes to using Pinterest in order to self-promote my own projects and really make an influential difference ind doing so. Turns out I didn’t know everything. Imagine that.

Pinterest For Dummies has the answer to any Pinterest-related questions or concerns you may have. From how to set up an account and start pinning to the many devices you can access and use Pinterest on and controlling your privacy settings, it is all covered. In addition to the whole self-promotion aspect of Pinterest, I was also very interested in getting tips on using Pinterest as an organization tool, effective mood board, and event planning tool. My life has recently changed in some very drastic ways. My partner of six and half years became my fiance in mid-April and in the beginning of February we bought our own home. I am now in the middle of creating a warm and inviting home that signifies who we are and starting the very beginning stages of wedding planning simultaneously! Lo and behold, I not only found out the easiest way to organize the many things Pinterest can inspire, but I also learned how to make a board a collaborative project and read about how it can also be used as a shopping list, a bookmarking site, and even using it to support a cause. There’s a whole lot of valuable information in this book.

The last two chapters of Pinterest For Dummies are also great resources. Chapter 11 lists 10 companies that are using Pinterest effectively, including Etsy, Lowe’s Whole Foods, and Better Homes and Gardens. Chapter 12 lists 10 power pinners that if you have a Pinterest account, you should be following. I was pleased to find out that I already follow the majority of the people who were listed and I definitely agree with the recommendations. The 10 people listed in this book have already been inspiring me on Pinterest exponentially throughout the past several months that I have been using the website.

Feathers are a huge trend right now, and they are showing no signs of going anywhere anytime soon. Feathers have made several recent appearances on catwalks and red carpets, and peacock feathers especially have become a popular wedding theme. After hair feathers became a standout accessory all on their own, they have now been incorporated into just about every accessory imaginable to create fabulous and sometimes daring statement pieces.

I was recently sent a selection of feather accessories from KissPat Feather Store, all of which are really cute and just a lot of fun to accessorize with. I am really excited about them and am glad to have the opportunity to share my thoughts on these products with you all.

I’m going to start with my absolute favorite product, which is the item that immediately caught my attention when I was first looking through the KissPat Feather Store website when the prospect of working with them was first presented to me, and that is the headband.

While they have a wide variety of different types of feather headbands, the one I received is supremely awesome. It is made up of an assortment of predominantly yellow and brown feathers with just a touch of dark blue feathers, and of course, the truly fantastic black and white polka dot feathers, which I am a big fan of! It also features a topaz pear-shaped gem that sits on the end of the feathers, giving it a nice finishing touch without taking anything away from the glory of the feathers, which obviously are meant to make quite a statement on their own. This headband can be worn with virtually anything; dress up, dress down, and let this headband shine as one of the few accessories you wear that day. I love it!

Generally, my taste in earrings is simple and subtle. I have a handful of silver hoops that my father has given me for Christmas throughout the past few years, and those are about all I wear. The feather earrings that KissPat surprised me with are something that I would have never chosen for myself, mostly because I have a hard time taking that initial risk when it comes to nearly anything, and not knowing if I could pull off feather earrings is enough to make me shy away from them all together. Therein lies the reason why surprises are awesome, because these earrings, while definitely not everyday wear, are great for infusing a whole lot of fun into a simple outfit. You can see the detail in them in the picture at the top of this post because unfortunately, I could not for the life of get me a picture with the front of the earrings facing outward while I wore them, which happens when you have earrings of this size that dangle–they take on a life of their own. Surprisingly, at least to me, these earrings are very comfortable; because feathers are practically weightless, so are these earrings, and you can wear them for several hours without feeling the least bit of pulling on your earlobes.

Because KissPat is a feather accessory store, a selection of their products wouldn’t be complete without trying out their hair feathers. Unlike another brand of hair feathers that I became familiar with last year, these are attached to small clips that make it extremely easy to attach to your hair. I was really happy that I didn’t have to re-teach myself how to get that tiny plastic o-ring to attach to just the right portion and thickness of hair. Because of the clip, these hair feathers can be removed in seconds at the end of the day, just as easily as they go in.

I received two different hair feathers; one that is short in length, perfect for my shoulder-length hair, and has really fun, bright pink, blue, and green colored feathers. The other is made up of three larger brown and white feathers that are hung from strips of brown suede. These feathers are much longer, so I clipped them in higher on my head so that they didn’t look funny sticking too far out from my hair. I think both of the feathers look pretty great and after wearing both of them on several different occasions, I was really happy with the fact that the clip did not come loose in my hair, fall out, or shift around; as soon as it was attached to my hair, it was there to stay until I took it out.

The label contains safety and precautionary statements that warn against mixing Super Strength with chlorine bleach, ammonia, or other chemicals, as hazardous gases may result, as well as proper directions for how to use this cleaner in your home, recommended with the use of rubber gloves. To be honest, the obvious harshness of the chemicals in Super Strength and the safety language taking up nearly the entire small print portion of the label put me off. I have two extremely beloved cats who have their run of the house and two young stepdaughters who are here often, so when a household cleaner label recommends that I wear rubber gloves when using their product, I think about all of the surfaces in my house that have paws and little fingers all over them (read: all of them.) So when I did clean with Greased Lightning Super Strength, I poured a small amount of the cleaner into a basin and diluted it, making the solution between 50 to 75% water, adjusting it to be more or less concentrated depending on the amount of grime or dirt I was competing with, and using a designated cloth only to be used with this product.

Greased Lightning Super Strength has been awesome in cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen in my home. In the bathroom, I used it to clean the toilet, using my Super Strength and water solution and a bristled brush to wipe away lines, and it cleared soap scum in the shower away completely with surprisingly little effort. It has also been used on our sinks to clear away toothpaste residue, as well as on our tile floors. In the kitchen, Greased Lightning Super Strength’s de-greasing ability easily fought through grease splatters that had built up on the back splash of our oven and on the stove top and microwave. It was also used on our kitchen sink, counter tops, and on the surface of the refrigerator and dishwasher that can easily get marked up with fingerprints and other residue in no time at all. While I predominantly used Super Strength in these two rooms, it can also be used to clean baseboards throughout the entire house, plastic blinds and accessories, all room fixtures including doorknobs and light switches, all floors including carpets, and it’s even a stain-fighter. Greased Lightning has got versatility and multi-purpose down.

Everyone in the family can help save water by doing very simple things, such as only washing full loads of laundry; using the light wash setting on your dishwasher; using reusable bottles for beverages such as water and coffee; turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth; taking showers instead of baths and limiting your showers to 10 minutes; and switching to an eco-friendly shower head, just to name a few.

I admit that cutting down your shower time can be difficult, especially after a long, exhausting day when all you want is to feel the hot water against the back of your neck. We were recently able to start saving water in our home, and money on our water bill, with the Waterpik ECO-563 EcoFlow shower head, and we have had great results with it in the last few weeks.

Replacing our old shower head with the Waterpik EcoFlow shower head was incredibly easy and took just a few minutes to attach it right to our existing shower arm. The first thing you will immediately notice is that it is gorgeous. Personally, the full body spray is great for a quick shower, while the circular massage is for those days when you want to close your eyes and feel the hot water on your body, carrying away all of your stress and leaving you invigorated.

EcoFlow shower heads use OptiFLOW Technology that improves water force by up to 30% while still conserving water, but not sacrificing its performance, so you are still guaranteed to get a refreshing shower experience.

By replacing your standard shower head with an EcoFlow, you will save up to 1 gallon of water per minute and up to $100 a year on your water bill (based on two 10-minute showers per day.) Breakfast is, as we all know, the most important meal you’ll eat all day. You will need:

• 1 fully ripened avocado from Mexico, halved, pitted and peeled
• Salt
• Ground black pepper
• 2 large slices bread, toasted
• Optional: 2 slices bacon, cooked and halved, or 2 tablespoons chopped tomato

Directions:

In a bowl, coarsely mash avocado with a fork; season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide avocado onto toast and spread to cover; cut each slice in half.

If desired, tuck a piece of bacon into avocado on each toast half, or slice tomato over top and serve.

Just a little over a month ago, stories, advice, tips, and ideas from how to sweep our lovers off their feet to the specifics of planning romantic gestures both grand and simple were coming at us left and right. Every blog, magazine, and talk show host had something to say about how to spend Valentine’s Day. Yet the very next morning, our workloads, routines, multi-tasking, cleaning the house in our sweats, and everything else that makes up our every day lives was back in effect and the topic of romance was no longer on everyone’s collective minds. Love isn’t in the air solely during the month of February. Romance is something every relationship needs frequent doses of all year long.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the stresses and tasks that we all have to get accomplished, and it’s easy to think that there isn’t enough time in the day or the finances in the budget to put together a truly romantic experience for you and your partner. However, there are ways to inject romance into your relationship every single day, because honestly, it’s the little things that make a relationship mutually fulfilling and long-lasting.

So, here are some things that my partner and I do and have done to keep romance alive and well, and our love strong in the six and a half years we have been together:

• We take care of each other. No one responsibility lies solely on the shoulders of just one of us; instead, we tackle daily life from the perspective of a mutual partnership. Finances, (most) housework, grocery shopping, and errands are a joint effort, with two exceptions: I do the laundry because I am incredibly particular about the way it is done, and my partner does the majority of the cooking because he is better at it.
• We say ‘thank you’ and express appreciation for each other.
• We laugh–a lot. Goofy faces, absurd voices (I have several), suddenly turning a walk into a little dance, and giving our cats personalities and voices that we make up on the spot are just a few of the things we do to get silly.
• We rough house like we’re kids. Now, this doesn’t happen often, particularly because if we spent that much time landing way too hard on our bed we would probably break it, but when we get into those silly moods and start tickling each other and wrestling, I think about it for days and it always brings a huge grin to my face.
• Never underestimate the power of a sweet note. The first time my partner put the toilet paper roll on the holder the right way (the right way being with the paper coming out over the roll and not under), he wrote on the paper (an accomplishment in itself) that he made sure to put it on the holder that way because he knew that is the way I like it. The man made toilet paper romantic!
• We hold hands; while watching television, while out shopping, or taking a walk together.

Above all, I think we really value and make the most of our time together. We both work full-time from home, which tends to give people the idea that we’re attached at the hip 24/7, which isn’t the case. We have separate work spaces. My partner, a professional musician and guitar instructor, works out of the basement apartment of our home that you have to go outside and down the steps of our back porch to get to, while I work predominantly at our kitchen table. We’re both admitted workaholics, so it’s fairly typical for us to spend most of our days apart. The time that we really dedicate solely to one another is dinnertime. As soon as the dinner process begins, technology is put away and we can talk and focus on each other while, most of the time, my partner cooks and I help with preparation and just enough so I can say that I contributed.

Of course, just like anyone else, sometimes we’re really lazy and want the perks of being able to hang out and share a meal without doing a whole lot of work or having to drive to the next city or two over to go out to a restaurant. For times like these, we have been known to reach for a frozen solution.

Recently, we were able to try Dr. Oetker Ristorante Pizzas, a line of frozen pizzas that are so unlike the average frozen pizzas I’ve grown accustomed to.

We were sent two different flavors of Dr. Oetker Ristorante Pizzas–Mozzarella and Spinaci. I really loved the Mozzarella flavor; it was cheesy, there was a generous portion of delicious, sweet tomatoes and herbs, and the crust was thin and crispy. What was really surprising, especially since we’re talking about frozen food here, was that the herbs and tomatoes tasted like they were really quality ingredients. They weren’t just good, but really really good. My partner and I were in awe, repeatedly commenting on how much better these pizzas are than what we were expecting. I immediately knew why Dr. Oetker’s Ristorante is Italy’s #1 frozen pizza brand.

The Spinaci flavor was, of course, topped with spinach. I haven’t eaten a lot of spinach in my life and when I have, it was usually mixed into a pasta sauce of some sort and I barely noticed it was there. On this pizza, the spinach takes center stage. It is the star of the pizza, and I found out that I am not a fan of spinach. I kept commenting on the “oils” I tasted, which my partner kept assuring me was the taste of spinach. After eating half of my piece, I was really wishing I had another Mozzarella pizza. My partner really liked the spinach, though, so at least it didn’t go to waste.

Dr. Oetker Ristorante Pizzas are really easy to make, perfect for lunch or dinner when you really don’t feel like making an effort but still want a tasty meal. Just take the pizza out of the cardboard box, unwrap it, place it directly on the middle rack of your oven, and wait 10-12 minutes.

The only complaint I have about these pizzas is that they are very small. I would love to see a larger version come out that could feed more than two people. My partner and I split the pizzas we made and after we finished the first one, my partner was ready for more pizza, so I would say that one of these pizzas could feed two people, or just one very hungry man.

The most recent Dietary Guidelines recommend that people get at least 48 grams of whole grain in their daily diets. If you’re like me, you have no idea how that translates into how much of what you should be eating daily. I have never been able to crack the Dietary Guidelines Code. I can read as many food packages as I want, but after reading off a seemingly endless list of ingredients for everything I put into my cart at the grocery store, I still walk out of there with a wish and a hope that I have a week’s worth of daily whole servings of what my body needs. Isn’t this the stuff we all learned year after year in health class; if it was easy enough to teach to us then, then why is it so difficult to figure out now as an adult?

The food industry advances and changes frequently and it is our responsibility to change right along with it while also learning to become more aware. We are bombarded by all sorts of health messages about our food every day in commercials, on the news, in newspapers, magazines, advertisements, and in the aisles of our local stores. It is sometimes hard to differentiate between what is hype to sell more of a product and what we should actually be paying close attention to.

One of the most deceiving products in terms of nutritional benefits that we all regularly buy is breakfast cereal. It isn’t like when you’re in the snack aisle and you know that everything located there is bad for you. In the cereal aisle, everything is combined. You have your bran sitting right next to your Cocoa Pebbles and you’re trying to find that balance between a cereal that is wholesome while also being something everyone in your family, especially kids, will eat.
