After all the years of companies trying to come up with shocking, totally out there products, I do not frequently come across something that makes me think “Wow, did they really do that?” But that’s exactly what I did when I came across the tampon flash drive from Meninos, an online retailer that reminds me, in a lot of ways, of ThinkGeek when it comes to simple products like t-shirts, mugs and yes, tech gadgets like flash drives that are utterly hilarious and not really compatible with everyone’s taste level.

Sadly, there is no definitive price on the tampon flash drive, which has to be horrible for sales because I know I’m not one to go ahead and email a company about a product they have failed to make openly available. I did immediately think that I needed this product when I first saw it though because, what can I say, I really like weird things that start some even weirder conversations. Not to mention that I also run a website called Menstrual Poetry. This tampon flash drive would be hilarious and I would love it, but what about you? Would you carry this flash drive around with you and undoubtedly collect very weird stares from people who catch a glimpse of it?

Earlier this month at the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, California, Bill Gates spoke about how people go about accomplishing their college education goals and what the web could potentially do for self-starting young adults. He predicts that in just five years time, you will be able to find the best lectures in the world on the web for free and stressed that college needs to be less “place-based.”

A lot of people have already come out and said Bill Gates is off the mark on this one, but after hearing the comments he made further along with his “predictions,” I’m inclined to agree with where he’s coming from. The overall point he was trying to make is that college, as it is right now and in this country, is too expensive and it’s too hard for young adults (and let’s face it, older adults as well) to get an upper-level education. According to Gates, a major problem with the education system today is text books, saying that even in grade schools, a math text book can be 300 pages — “They’re giant, intimidating books. I look at them and think: what on Earth is in there?” He also pointed out that text book in the U.S. are three times longer than the equivalents in Asia, a country that is currently beating the U.S. in many ways in terms of education and because text books are built by committee, these books are overloaded with information that really doesn’t need to be there.

While Gates’ comments about college education needing to be less “place-based” could very well be seen as radical, there are a number of excellent educational resources online, put online by prestigious and well-known educational institutions, that are free of charge. We’re a lot further with education being available on the web instead of in a typical classroom than many may think, you just have to know where to look to find the information you’re most interested in.

MIT OpenCourseWare — With over 2,000 courses available online, MIT OpenCourseWare should be your first (and maybe your only) stop in online learning.

It seems that for as many distinct and eccentric personalities there are in the world, there is a different phone to compliment each one. Everyone expects certain features from the phones they choose that go far beyond just being able to make and receive phone calls and text messages. As the technology we utilize on our computers continues to evolve, that same technology must evolve on our cell phones as well. Not only do you need to perform your basic functions, but because so many people, myself definitely included, are wired to the internet and to social media and networking most of the time, for a phone not to have those pertinent functions is downright unacceptable.

A phone service that keeps the demands of web professionals on the go in mind is Boost Mobile. Boost Mobile not only designs phones that are social in nature, not to mention extremely stylish and downright pretty, they also understand the minds of those who are dangerously fickle about their phones and pride themselves on not signing people into long-term contracts. Their monthly unlimited service for Blackberry is great, giving people features like multi-media messaging, instant messaging and web and email access for a flat rate, instead of nickel and diming their customers for every single addon that they essentially expect a phone to have.

One of the best features Boost Mobile has is their featured Re-Boost program that lets you pay your bill in a variety of ways to ensure that you get your payments in on time and at maximum convenience for your daily lifestyle. You have the option of paying your bill online, setting up worry-free automatic payments with a credit or debit card, or register your card for future payments. You can also pay in person at your local Re-Boost location and you also have the ability to pay by phone. The Re-Boost program also lets you add money to a friend or family member’s Boost Mobile account using a credit or debit card without tying your card to that person’s account.

If you’re in the market for a new phone or phone service, check out Boost Mobile and everything they have to offer all without signing yourself away to a long-term contract.

Twitter has just launched the offical Tweet Button, a small button that when clicked, will bring up a small window that lets you log into your Twitter account and automatically share what you’re reading with all of your followers.

Twitter found that close to a quarter of all Tweets contain a link in them and I know from personal experience that every single piece of huge news out there that I get, comes directly from the people I follow on Twitter. Whenever there is a celebrity death, breaking world news, or something going on that I’m interested in, Twitter is the service that is usually making me aware of it. Now, with the release of the Twitter Button, sharing links to what you’re reading and interested in is simpler than having to open Twitter in your browser or load your desktop Twitter application and shorten a link. Just by clicking on the official Twitter button, that has already been implemented on countless websites you frequent every day, you can share that information in a lot less time.

We have just implemented the official Twitter Button here on Woman Tribune and already, I found a really awesome feature that I’m super excited about. If you click on the number of the Tweets a particular blog post has on the Tweet Button, it will bring you to Twitter and show you, in real time, who’s retweeting that post. To see it in action, take a look at everyone Tweeting about our $25 Walmart gift card giveaway.

Before the launch of this official Tweet Button, there was a very popular retweet button made by TweetMeme and they haven’t been left out by Twitter releasing their official button. In fact, the developers behind TweetMeme will be working closely with Twitter.

TweetMeme has written on their blog all about how they will be working with Twitter to assist them in the technical challenges involved with the button and they will also be working with Twitter on delivering real-time curation of the Twitter Firehose.

Websites like Huffington Post, Gawker Media, SFGate, Hulu, CNN and many others have already implemented the Tweet Button on their websites and if you want to put it on yours, just grab the short code and you’ll automatically be making it super easy for your readers to share your content.

It is always wise to keep the possibility of a zombie invasion open; it’s usually the people who don’t believe in zombies that are the first to be eaten. To make matters worse, they’re not only eaten, but devoured by the people they thought were their friends; and perhaps they were friends, before one couldn’t help but stalk their friend down and start feasting on their meaty arm.

Luckily, there is now an iPhone app that could possibly save your life in the case of a zombie attack. Max Brooks’ bestselling book The Zombie Survival Guide is now a free iPhone app.

The Zombie Survival Guide Scanner is an app from the Crown Publishing Group that uses the iPhone’s rear camera to take a picture of someone and “scan” their face to illustrate their infection rate. After all, it’s the people you know the best who are always trying to convince you that they’re not infected and then before you know it, they’re trying to eat you. With this app, you just scan their face and see if they’re truly an uninfected human who needs to accompany you out of town, or if you need to shoot them in the head.

All joking aside, this app is hilarious and will keep you occupied for hours, especially if you walk down a busy street and snap pictures of random people and see them get zombiefied right on your phone. It’s great to see more businesses, in this case Crown Publishing Group, developing apps that will go over huge in order to use it as a marketing tool to help build a book’s fanbase.

If you’re heading to New York City to attend the sixth annual BlogHer conference August 6th and 7th, you will need to make a note in your presumably chaotic agenda for the night of August 6th.

If you have attended BlogHer in the past, or just know a lot about it from seeing it being blogged about practically everywhere or have a few friends who have attended the conferences and just had to share every single detail with you, you know that in 2008 a tradition was created–the Community Keynote. This year will be no different, but after two years of receiving hundreds of submissions for the Community Keynote and going through the agonizing process of narrowing the list of entries down to just 15 to 20, this year’s Community Keynote will work a little differently and it will include quite a few more people.

While 15 bloggers will be chosen to present their work to the BlogHer community, 75 additional bloggers will also be honored as Voices of the Year. BlogHer has partnered with the savvy social media mavens behind Kirtsy, Gabrielle Blair, Laura Mayes and Laurie Smithwick to create a Gala of quality voices that will be heard during the 2010 BlogHer Community Keynote. The event, BlogHer 2010 Voices of the Year Gala and Art Auction Curated by Kirtsy, will be held the night of Friday, August 6th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm and it will be held over an entire floor of the Hilton hotel in New York.

So what kind of things can you expect from this Gala? Well, one section will feature a type of performance art from bloggers like Jenny of The Bloggess. In another section, Karen of Chookooloonks and other accompanying bloggers will be painting and throughout the entire party, there will be an art exhibit full of artwork and photography from over 150 bloggers.

The auction segment of the Gala will not take place during the same night. Instead, it will be held a few weeks after BlogHer has ended and everyone who attended is still adjusting back into their daily routine and planning for next summer’s BlogHer conference. All of the proceeds from the auction will benefit Nature Conservancy to assist with oil cleanup in the Gulf.

Sounds like a pretty awesome party and a great way to feature the bloggers who work hard to keep their blogs up and running and whose creativity and openness we can sometimes take advantage of as readers.

There are countless podcasts making their presence known on the internet. Regardless of your interests, you can find a podcast (or 50) that you can quickly become addicted to and like your favorite television show, not be able to miss an episode of. Podcasts bring back the love of radio, where we pay more attention to the words people have to say than the pictures we’re seeing on a screen. But radio isn’t cool anymore, now that it has become a giant business of deception and the people have always been more entertaining than the hired hands telling the people what they want to listen to.

The question is–what podcasts do you listen to? What are the top-rated podcasts that have claimed the attention and hearts of those who have been listening to it since its inception and what podcasts should you be listening to that perhaps the rest of the internet world hasn’t caught on to yet?

Here are 5 podcasts that are entertaining, thought-provoking and just plain awesome. You’re bound to find one that fits well.

This American Life

This American Life is the most popular podcast in the country. It garners more than a half million downloads per episode and includes much of the same content heard on the This American Life public radio show that is broadcast on more than 500 stations.

This American Life is comprised of an array on non-fiction stories, investigative journalism, fiction, essays and experimental story telling. This American Life helped to launch the literary careers of David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell and David Rakoff.

Muckmakers

Muckmakers is a blog dedicated to exposing corrupt politicians, businessmen, religious leaders, celebrities, or other public figures in the most brutally honest manner possible. It was created to inform the public of what is going on right under their noses and hopefully inspire and motivate people to want to do something about it.

The Muckmakers podcast has the same premise as the blog, where the two creators of the site can expand a little more on their thoughts and generally talk about what’s going on in the world. If you’re interested in politics and have a passion for analyzing everything from politics, religion and current events or just have a love of hearing about hot button debate issues, check it out.

WireTap

WireTap is a Canadian public radio show from Jonathan Goldstein, former This American Life producer. Like Jerry Seinfeld and Woody Allen, Goldstein takes an alter ego approach full of self-deprecating humor with the weekly installments of WireTap. In addition to discussing the minutiae of daily life, WireTap also features short stories.

The New Yorker Fiction Podcast

The New Yorker Fiction Podcast features both well-known and up-and-coming authors who read short stories they have picked by their favorite authors. The New Yorker Fiction Podcast is a great find for anyone who needs that literary pick-me-up.

Kink On Tap

Kink On Tap is a thoughtful, well thought out and captivating podcast that brings up topics like sexuality, society, culture, feminism and queer issues and activism. The two hosts of the podcast have weekly guests where they speak in-depth about issues the guest is intimately involved with.

Facebook has reached 500 million users, making it the most popular social website on the internet (by a long shot.) To celebrate the tremendous milestone, not only will Facebook launch Facebook Stories, a website within Facebook that will sort user-submitted stories and feature them for all to see, but Facebook CEO, infamously camera shy Mark Zuckerberg, also sat down for an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer.

Sawyer asked Zuckerberg about the recent lawsuit pending in the Supreme Court of Allegany County, New York, that claims Zuckerberg had signed a contract to sign over 84% of ownership over Facebook. Here’s what he had to say about what has already been called a pretty ridiculous lawsuit across the board:

Facebook has also had a great deal of problems with users when it comes to privacy. People are running into confusion when it comes to what they are sharing and who they are sharing it with. Zuckerberg also addressed that.

Literally, countless. Sure, there are some heavy hitters out there that dominate the market, but there are also little morsels of goodness out there that, while lesser-known than a chosen few, still deliver the same thing with excellent quality. Not to mention, a lot of them are a great deal cheaper.

NameNova is one of those little morsels of goodness and is actually where I purchase all of my domain names–and I have quite a few. Of course what I love most about NameNova is that while I may pay almost $11 for a domain name anywhere else, with NameNova I pay $8 and some change. That alone is phenomenal, but they have three excellent coupons that just came out that you really need to know about.

Facebook has quickly become the most popular social website and next week, they will reach the tremendously impressive milestone of having 500 million users. This time last year, the site had just reached 200 million users and five months ago, 400 million people were logging onto Facebook.

To celebrate 500 million users, Randi Zuckerberg, the marketing guru behind Facebook, gave an interview to All Things Digital’s BoomTown blog, saying that to celebrate its number of users, the company wants it to be all about the users. The initiative she’s talking about is Facebook Stories.

From Mashable:

“Facebook Stories will be a website within Facebook that’ll sort actual, submitted user stories by location and theme. Theme examples given included “finding love” and “natural disasters.” Each story will be limited to the same number of characters a Facebook status caps out at: 420.”

Do you have a great Facebook story of your own you would like to share with the 499 million other Facebook users out there? You can submit your own story and if it becomes popular, gaining more “Likes” than most of the other user-submitted stories, it could be featured among other popular Facebook stories.

I have three Google accounts. Yes, four. I have one for all of my email and Google-streamlined websites, including YouTube and FeedBurner, for this website, for my other personal blog which also ties into my new blog I recently started with a friend of mine, Women’s Eye on Media and another one for my life as a freelance web designer and developer. That is three accounts I have to check not only daily, but several times a day. Wouldn’t it be so much easier to just be able to sign into your multiple Google accounts all at the same time, in the same browser and everything?

I’ve been wanting that kind of function for as long as I’ve had three Google accounts. And now, it just may become a reality.

Google is currently testing a feature that will allow Google users (also known as everyone with an internet connection everywhere) to sign into multiple accounts for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Reader, Google Docs, Google Sites and Google Code. When you sign in with multiple accounts, Google will let you open Gmail in multiple tabs, log in using different accounts and read the messages from all your accounts without opening another browser.

There’s no word on when this will be available, but as far as I’m concerned, it can’t come soon enough.

And today on the topic of ridiculous lawsuits! Paul Ceglia, a wood pellet distributor who claims he had signed a contract with Facebook in 2003 to design and develop thefacebook.com, Facebook’s original name, is suing the social media website. No, Mr. Ceglia isn’t suing the website for a set monetary amount. He’s going for the juggler. He wants power in the form of 84% of ownership of the website.

The lawsuit was filed in the Supreme Court of Allegany County in New York last month and according to the contract he signed with the people behind “thefacebook.com”, he was to be given $1,000 and a 50% stake in Facebook for the services he provided. Not only that, but he claims he was also to be given a 1% stake in the company for each day that passed until the site was finished. The website was complete on February 4, 2004 and after adding it all up, Ceglia claims that he should rightfully be owed 84% of Facebook.

The lawsuit is a little weird because firstly, where has this guy been? Facebook is bigger now than it has ever been which definitely piques your interest when you’re thinking of the perfect time to sue a company and get a pretty penny out of them. Ceglia has not made any mention of this case for over six years after he had signed the contract with Facebook. Furthermore, Ceglia was just sued last year for failing to deliver wood pellets to customers. He racked up damages to the effect of $200,000. How is he going to dig himself out of that whole? Well, 84% of Facebook should more than cover it, don’t you think?

While the likelihood of Paul Ceglia actually walking out of court with 84% ownership of Facebook is very slim, the court has issued a temporary restraining order which makes it illegal for Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook to transfer any assets. To put it lightly, Facebook is definitely feeling the pressure from this court case. Facebook will need to go to court to disprove Ceglia’s claims and from the sounds of it, the lawsuit sounds pretty ridiculous, to say the least. How does a company give a web designer and developer stake in the company and keep adding to the stake the longer it takes him to complete his work? That is just rewarding someone for not completing a project and that makes absolutely no sense.

You can see the entire lawsuit and all 9 court documents over at Mashable.

The internet television website Hulu is going the way all successful free services go eventually–they want your money.

Hulu Plus is a monthly subscription service that will give you access to every episode of every show they have available; shows from networks like ABC, NBC, FOX, and others. The paid service also includes every episode of past seasons, instead of just the most-recent four or five episodes of the current season, as it is currently set up.

For $10 per month, you will gain access to any and all episodes of a show on your computer, iPhone, iPad, as well as on your television, if you have an internet-connected TV or Blu-Ray player. Hulu Plus will also be made available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, as well as on other platforms in the future.

Paying $10 a month to get Hulu (almost) everywhere you want it and gaining access to not just current and future episodes of your favorite shows, but also to all past episodes as well seems like a pretty sweet deal. However, I was pretty disappointed to see that Hulu will be keeping their commercials, even for people who pay the monthly service fee. Not only that, but they have worded it in such a way that they want you, the person paying $10 every month for their service, to get excited about getting to watch ads. In a company blog post, they had this to say about their ad-supported pay service: “Hulu Plus is a new, revolutionary ad-supported subscription product that is incremental and complementary to the existing Hulu service.”

Yeah… I get that the people behind Hulu want to make money. I understand that any business needs to make money and when there is a way for them to make more of it, they should take it. But they will be making money from the people who choose to frequent the Hulu Plus service and who will be paying for that service. I think the most logical move here would be to keep the ads on the free version of Hulu, leaving it as it is now, but do away with them for the people who are putting money in their pockets.

Hulu Plus will quickly become a threat to services like Netflix, Amazon and iTunes, who currently charge upwards of $2 per episode. People who watch more than 5 episodes of a show a month will see substantial savings when they opt to utilize Hulu Plus.

Hulu Plus is invite-only as they roll out the new service, obviously taking a few pointers from Google when they introduced people to browser-supported email with Gmail, which you could only gain access to with an invitation from a friend who was already a Gmail user. If you’re excited about Hulu’s new service, you can sign up for an invite and wait until one becomes available.

The iPhone 4 will hit the shelves on June 24th and just about every Apple junkie is counting down the days, hours and minutes until they can finally hold it in their hands and call it their own.

If you pre-ordered your iPhone 4, Apple has good news for you — they have separated pre-order customers from the non-pre-order customers, making everything a whole lot less time-consuming for those who thought ahead and wanted to make sure an iPhone 4 would be in their possession as soon as possible. For the rest of you, it’s going to be a very long wait in line the morning of June 24th, you have my sympathies.

While you may think you can just hop in your car and head on down to the nearest store that stock electronics, you should know where the best–and the worst–places to try to score your new iPhone are, so pay attention.

Apple Store
Doors to Apple stores will open at 7am and there will be two lines, one for customers with pre-orders and one for non pre-orders so make sure you get in the right line so you don’t waste your morning (or night before) away.

AT&T:
Select AT&T stores will also be opening early, so make sure to call their customer service line or your local AT&T store to see if your location is one that is opening its door earlier than usual and also be sure to inquire about their stock of the iPhone 4.

Best Buy:
Speaking of the stock a certain store will receive of the iPhone 4, if you plan on hitting up Best Buy, keep in mind that it has been confirmed that they will only have anywhere from 20 to 70 iPhone 4Gs per store, and that is the 16GB version. The 32GB versions will be more rare, with each store only receiving as low as 10. If you have your heart set on a white iPhone, you may not be able to get one at all at Best Buy because while they have been ordered, it’s unclear if they will be received in time for the day of launch.

Walmart:
This is the first time Walmart will have a new iPhone on launch day. Most of the Walmart locations open at 8am but if you plan on heading to a 24 hour location, I know from experience that they will sell you products that have a specific launch date as early as 4am. However, because the iPhone 4 is such a big deal, you may want to call your local Walmart and double check.

Radio Shack
Radio Shack announced via Twitter that customers could begin pre-ordering their iPhone 4 on June 15th and have been taking orders since. However, there is no real clarity on how many phones they will get in stock for launch day, so only bet on Radio Shack as a last attempt.

The days of MTV VJ’s are way over–does anyone else out there remember Jesse? MTV has a job opening for any social media gurus out there who are looking for a fun, new environment–and just so happen to also live in New York City.

MTV is currently looking for someone who can engage the network’s audience, spread the word about important events, report on MTV special events like the Video Music Awards coming up in September–and do it all in 140 characters or less.

According to MTV, they are looking for a social media maven who will represent their audience by taking note of their thoughts and questions and who will be able to bring those questions inside the walls of the people who make the network what it is.

But of course MTV isn’t just looking for resumes–that has never been their style. Anyone interested in the full-time Twitter Jockey position will take part in a series of online challenges over the course of the summer. The challenges are designed to reveal the applicants’ personalities and to also demonstrate how they connect with Twitter followers.

There are currently 18 potential candidates for the job and MTV is looking for two more. You can nominate yourself or your favorite Facebook friends for the position online. After the challenges, the five finalists will be part of a live show airing August 8th where MTV fans will hold all the power in choosing who gets the new job.

And is it really a sweet a deal as it sounds? Well, considering the new MTV TJ will earn a six-figure salary, I think it is.

It has been a huge hit with pretty much every age group out there who can pick up a plastic guitar and press its buttons, from small children to the elderly. Since its debut in 2005, Guitar Hero has raked in more than $2 billion and it was really only a matter of time before it was taken to the iPhone level.

News of the arrival of Guitar Hero to the iPhone was announced during yesterday’s WWDC conference just before the news broke of the new iPhone 4.

It will cost you $2.99 to get Guitar Hero on your iPhone and contains the same features and functionality you’ve grown accustomed to in the original, full-sized game. You have the ability to create a custom, 3D avatar that you can share with your friends and can play along with music from Queen, The Rolling Stones and many others.

The app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Everyone seems to be talking about how to be more eco-conscious and how to reduce our impact on the planet as we live out our daily lives. What I’ve also noticed, is that now more than ever before, more people are becoming aware of just how little effort it takes to “go green” and are implementing eco-friendly tips into their daily lifestyles. By just doing the little things that you think don’t matter, you are actually having a tremendous impact on the environment and your own communities.

So if you’ve been relying on your standard, energy-sucking alarm clock or even decorative desk and night table clocks, take a look at this awesome clock from Bedol.

The Bedol water clock is your standard timepiece that also has an alarm clock built in it.

First of all, it must be mentioned that the Bedol water clock looks really, really cool. It’s hip, colorful and fun. The purple clock is pictured here, but is also available in an array of colors including blue, orange, green, and pink. How it works is pretty awesome, too. By converting the ions from water into energy, this clock keeps perfect time without the use of batteries or standard electricity. It runs solely on water and you can fill it with plain tap water by unscrewing the base of the clock and filling it right up. The water will not need to be replaced for at least 12 weeks, but if you forget to refill it and it stops, it has a built-in memory chip that remembers the time so you don’t have to reset it.

The Bedol water clock is perfect for anyone who strives to reduce their carbon footprint, for kids and teens who will definitely get a kick out of its water technology, and for anyone who travels and doesn’t want to lug around their bulky plug-in alarm clock. And with a price tag of just $29, why not pick up a couple of them?

We are taking care of our families, we are working, we are running errands and making healthy meals and taking kids to ballet classes and sports lessons. We’re wondering when the next time will be where we can take a hot bath and not have someone come barging through the door, never mind how we’re supposed to keep our homes clean and welcoming. In fact, whenever my partner tells me he has someone coming over to jam or record (he’s a musician, “jam” and “record” are every day words that get tossed about), I’m scrambling around the house trying to pick up dirty clothes and wipe down kitchen counters all the while yelling at him to help me pick up so his friends and colleagues don’t walk in and immediately turn around and run screaming out of the house.

I am not alone. There are many, many, MANY other women out of there who get home after a long day of working or errands, or working and errands, take off their shoes and feel like crawling right into bed because they’re so exhausted, yet there’s always so much to do and our work is never truly done.

Lisa Quinn understands. She not only understands, but she wrote a book about how women can’t get everything done–and that’s okay. Lisa Quinn is an Emmy Award-winning television host who used to go gaga over Martha–she is now reformed and is feeling a lot better now and shares her wisdom in the upcoming Life’s Too Short to Fold Fitted Sheets.

To celebrate the release of Life’s Too Short to Fold Fitted Sheets, MomSelect is having a Twitter party where we can all share our own secret weapons for domestic survival and balancing family, life and happiness. Some lucky Twitter party-goers will also have a chance to win a copy of the book for themselves.

So join MomSelect (and a bunch of fab women including me!) on Tuesday, May 5th at 8PM EST and use the hashtag #LifesTooShort. The Twitter party will be hosted by @MomTalkRadio and be sure to also follow @ResourcefulMom and @MomSelectAmy for updates, prize information and contest details during the party.

See you there!

The Ultimate Blog Party 2010 has officially begun! Towards the end of March Jenny posted about the annual blogging event going on at 5 Minutes for Mom and since then, I have been completely stoked for it, having participated the last two years, each time being amazed at the wonderful women I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and the new blogs I was introduced to and still read today. Finally, the time is here and I can’t wait to meet even more wonderful ladies!

So I suppose I should tell you a little about myself…

My name is Holly and I created this here website. Woman Tribune is more of a women’s magazine than your average blog. We try to post on a variety of different topics and issues that are important to women today, from the serious, like parenting, green living and ways people and organizations are changing the world, to the completely frivolous and fun entertainment industry. No one has just one interest, which was the exact concept behind the creation of this blog, being a woman of many interests myself, and also a woman who wears many different hats. While you’ll find a lot of news oriented things here, I’m always sure to add a personal touch to what I write and you’ll also be sure to find a lot of things about my day-to-day life and my family as well.

I’m 23 years old and I’m a full-time, professional blogger both here, as well as on a feminist/political website, Menstrual Poetry. When I’m not blogging, I do freelance writing, web design and development. Needless to say, I spend most of my time in front of a computer. I live with my partner of nearly 5 years, Allen, and our cat, Devin.

Yes, that is my obscenely over-crowded desk and Devin acting like she owns the place.

While we don’t have any children of our own, I get to share his two little girls from his previous marriage. Their names are Lydian, who is five and Rylie, who is four. They provide constant joy, laughter, challenges and have a tendency to consistently get me to question my own sanity. Fortunately, I happen to have a database of Disney Princess trivia stored in my head, which gives me unlimited brownie points with Rylie.

I’m really excited to be participating in this year’s Ultimate Blog Party and I also happen to have a really great giveaway going on; well, at least I think it’s pretty great! Oddly enough, coinciding my giveaways with the party was not planned, it just happened to (thankfully) work out that way.

We are giving away 10 copies of the new edition of My Little Red Book, an anthology of short stories from women of all ages, from all around the world about first periods. To win, all you have to do is leave a comment on the giveaway post telling us about your first period. Don’t worry, we’re not asking for graphic details! This giveaway ends April 14th, so go enter!

Lastly, you can follow Woman Tribune on Twitter @WomanTribune and become a fan of Woman Tribune on Facebook–if you like Woman Tribune, that is! Otherwise you don’t have to and I won’t be mad or anything!

That’s it for me! I hope you enjoyed your time here on Woman Tribune and got a feel for what I’m all about. I love meeting new, fellow bloggers and I can’t wait to meet all of the wonderful ladies participating in the Ultimate Blog Party. Happy blog hopping!

Gmail was launched on April 1, 2004. Today, the webmail service that significantly changed the webmail standard for the better, turns six!

Gmail first garnered attention when it came on the scene as an invitation-only beta release, which made tech-savvy folk eager to try it out, which then sparked even more buzz for the service, and didn’t become available to the general public until February 7, 2007, although it did keep its beta status. As of July 2009, Gmail emerged from its beta status and is trusted by more than 146 million users monthly. Gmail is one of the most popular webmail clients in the world, coming out on top compared to other, older webmail staples Yahoo Mail and Hotmail.

Not only was Gmail the first webmail service to give their users so much space, making it possible for even those who receive an enormous amount of email to not have to delete a piece of email that could wind up being important a week, a month or even a year down the road, but it also does the best job of any other webmail service, keeping your spam in the spam folder and out of your inbox–as well as give you recipes for delicious recipes using the food spam. If you are into that kind of spam, of course.

Gmail has been the platform Google used to bring us additional services–Google Talk and Google Buzz and throughout the many years to come, as long as Google can keep email cool, we’ll be sure to have some others come along.

Happy Birthday, Gmail!

Sure, you may think plastic is biodegradable, but plastic actually never biodegrades completely. Plastic breaks down into nanoparticles and they have the capacity to cause damage to our bodies in the long-term. Luckily, there are companies taking the initiative to come up with simple ways to be and act green when it comes to our technology.

The Apple iPhone makes it easy for people to be a little greener by using apps that make it easy to find directions and use maps instead of printing out maps and directions to take on the road with you and it also lets people subscribe to the RSS feeds of online publications like NYTimes.com instead of flipping through a paper. With a piece of technology that helps you give a little back to Mother Earth, it’s only natural that your accessories, apps and disposal of these resource-savers do the same!

Agent 18 is a great, eco-friendly company committed to greening your iPhone and iPod accessories. Their EcoShield Slider is a sleek, tough case for your iPhone or iPod made from recycled plastic bottles. ($34.95)

The Better World Shopper iPhone and iPod app that has accumulated 20 years worth of data on over 1,000 companies from food manufacturers, baby care, vehicles, clothing, airlines, banks, body care and so on, and gives each company a grade (A through F) on how good of a corporate citizen that company has been when it comes to human rights, the environment, animal protection, community involvement and social justice. ($1.99)

Find Green iPhone and iPod Touch app lets you find green and sustainable businesses quickly and easily and helps you make everyday choices to reduce your environmental impact. Find Green is powdered by the GenGreenLife.com database of 56,000+ green businesses who have evaluated all businesses in the directory to ensure validity of the app. (free)

Don’t know where you nearest recycling center is? Use the iRecycle iPhone and iPod Touch app to find any recycling location in the US. You will find places to drop off old cell phones, water bottles, motor oil, and even mattresses and other hard-to-recycle items. iRecycle also makes finding local green news easy by giving you the latest headlines from Earth911.com. (free)

Don’t even think about throwing out your dead Apple computer, iPod or iPhone! Apple has a recycling program and are doing all they can to lessen their–and your–impact on the environment. You can recycle your computers and displays by mail, for free, so Apple can recycle responsibly and domestically. You can also mail in your iPods and mobile phones or bring them into an Apple Retail Store for 10% off a new one!

It’s an annual event where you can visit a shit’ton of bloggers and people, win prizes and make some new friends in the process.
