Astronaut Mike Massimino Becomes First Person to Tweet From Space
On Tuesday at 4:30pm EST astronaut Mike Massimino upated his Twitter with:
“From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!”
The only thing that separates him from millions of other people who tweet several times a day, every day, is that Massimino tweeted from space, making him the first person to ever tweet from space. He began tweeting in April as he prepared for the mission and with more than 241,000 followers, he kept his promise to file updates from the space shuttle Atlantis as it reasies to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. Atlantis is NASA’s fifth and final repair visit to the Hubble Space Telescope.

Gyminee, the Social Network for Fitness
Social networking may not be new, we’ve been utilizing social networking tools like MySpace for way too long and then came along it’s (far superior) nemesis, Facebook, and we’ve been addicted to Twitter for who knows how long! It feels like ages, really, when I think back to when I created my first MySpace account (because I’ve had several, trying to dodge people I went to high school that I couldn’t stand then and really don’t want to “reconnect” with now.) We’ve made groups, fan pages, and so on on these social networking platforms, but now there is a social network specifically for staying fit and healthy.
Gyminee helps you keep track of your workouts, monitor your diet, reach your fitness and health goals, and for good measure, gives you yet another social networking base to utilize …
Top Social Media Sites of 2008
2008 has seen a great rise in social media activity. More bloggers, entrepreneurs and businesses have started utilizing social media sites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, and so on.
While a great deal of people see greater networking results signing up and being active on several social media sites, what sites saw the most activity in 2008?
These findings, presented by ComScore, do not include December and include both social media and blogging platforms. Although the findings fail to include December and December is full of holiday craziness resulting in substantial dropping of hits, these findings are a great assessment of where social media sites stand at the close of this past year.
The top social media sites of 2008 according to ComScore are:
Blogger (222 million)
Facebook (200 million)
MySpace (126 million)
Wordpress (114 million)
Windows Live Spaces (87 …
Goodbye, Pownce
First we heard about Hugg being taken down and now, sadly, Pownce will be closing. This is a very sad time for anyone who clung to Pownce like a lifeline, as I know happens just from talking to people I’ve met through other social networking sites such as Twitter and Plurk.
Even though Pownce will be closing, the people behind Pownce are bittersweet about closing its doors. One one hand, yes, it is a sad time and it has been a sad time with a lot of different online communities battling the economic crisis, but the people behind Pownce are also moving on to Six Apart, the company behind well-known blogging software, Vox, Movable Type and TypePad.
Pownce will officially be closing on December …
RIP Hugg
Announced earlier this month, TreeHugger’s social media platform for all things green, Hugg, has reached its final days.
As many people may know, website costs can be a little worrisome to your wallet even if you are just starting out, but once a website hits a certain stage and develops a substantial following, web and maintenance costs only skyrocket and sometimes, no matter how good your website ratings are or how many advertisements you put on a website, you come to a point where you must ask yourself if the money and the effort is worth the payoff received. This could very well be what happened with Hugg, as it has had a decent lifespan as far as social media platforms go, and has developed into the resource for green news.
As of November 17, Hugg no longer accepts …
Help Support Locks of Love with Social Media
Heavy As Hell, a social media site for music of the rock, metal, punk, industrial and goth variety was relaunched at the beginning of this month. Not only is this good news for all music lovers, bloggers and followers everywhere, but it is also good news for Locks of Love.
Locks of Love helps financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love suffer from a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Locks of Love provides hairpieces to children to help to restore their self-esteem and confidence, which can of course be hard because children their own age are most of the time a child’s worst critics. By receiving a prostheses from Locks of …
