Encouraging and inspiring girls to develop and live a healthy lifestyle is incredibly important and the knowledge girls and young women rely on for that development has been proven time and again to start early. From the mainstream media’s insistence on showcasing stick-thin women on billboards, in magazines, and on television to the severe lack of full-figured role models in the media are enough to start the negative self-talk in girls very young. I am a huge advocate for giving girls and young women the tools and knowledge they need to build strong self esteem and the ability to appreciate themselves for who they are without wishing they were like someone else, so when I saw Go! Go! Sports Girls, I was immediately interested in learning more about them and spreading their message as far and wide as I possibly can.
Go! Go! Sports Girls are 14″ plush, sports-themed dolls that were designed as an educational toy to promote self appreciation and the benefits of daily exercise and healthy eating and sleeping habits in girls ages 3 to 12.
I was given the opportunity to receive a Go! Go! Sports Girls doll and I chose M.C. the dancer for my five-year-old stepdaughter who has been taking ballet classes for about a year now. There are a variety of different dolls who are interested in different sports, such as basketball, soccer, swimming, softball, and tennis, among others. Each doll also comes with a small backpack as well as sports accessories, like a small plush ball and bat, a golf club, and so on. Every Go! Go! Sports Doll also has their own unique story and background that promotes exercise and a healthy diet, like having an apple for a snack and drinking plenty of water, and there’s also information about their likes and dislikes. These are dolls that are very relateable and very fun while also telling girls that sports aren’t just for boys or that they don’t belong, which I really like.
Another aspect of Go! Go! Sports Girls that I love is that they are a business that strongly believes in giving back. A portion of their profits are donated to organizations that encourage girls to participate in physical activity and develop healthy lifestyles, like Girls, Inc. and Jack’s Fund.
Go! Go! Sports Girls have won numerous awards, including the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award in 2009 and Dr. Toy’s 10 Best Socially Responsible Products in 2010.
