Condé Nast Will Close Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride

After a severe decline in ad pages in print magazines as a whole, Condé Nast has been hit particularly hard, losing more than 8,000 ad pages as a whole. It is because of this that they announced Monday that they would be closing four of their magazines–Gourmet, Modern Bride, Elegant Bride and the most recent addition to the parenting magazine scene, Cookie.
While there was speculation that Condé Nast would close a food title, many thought the title that would be closing would be Bon Appétit since Gourmet has a longer and richer history, being published since January 1941 and the editor of the magazine, Ruth Reichl, is a powerful woman in the food world. In a February interview with publisher of Bon Appétit, Paul Jowdy, he stated that “if you think of two of the most prestigious, credible, trusted magazines in the industry, you’re going to say Bon Appétit and Gourmet.”
So if this kind of crisis could hit the most prestigious, credible and trusted magazines in the industries, what is to come of magazine publications in the future? This is definitely proof positive of the severity of the recession and hey, who can really afford to have a child or plan their fantasy wedding these days? Yeah, not too many people and the people who can have stylists and don’t necessarily need to scan magazines for ideas.
