It’s hard to believe that the first official day of fall will be here this weekend. While we have had nothing but chilly weather over the past two weeks, I’ve been holding out hope that we would have just one last lazy summer day; we have even put off closing our pool just in case we woke up one morning and it was magically 90 degrees outside. No such luck. The chilly weather is here to stay, and the leaves have already begun to turn and fall off the trees in our backyard. Like summer has a tendency to do, this one flew by, but this summer was a particularly special one for me.
My fiance and I moved into our own home last February, and not only are we now the proud owners of a real house, but we also have a fairly large yard and a pool, both of which we had never had before. After many years of slumming it in apartment living, we suddenly have all of this space, and boy did we use it! We hosted cookouts, small family get-togethers, and full-blown parties this summer.
And you know what goes with swimming and lounging out by the pool all day perfectly? Ice cream!
Nearly everyday this summer, if I went swimming, I would get extraordinary, insatiable cravings for ice cream. Every time, without fail. On more than occasion, my fiance informed me that I couldn’t get ice cream every single day, to which I could only reply with “why?”
One very distinct memory I have from childhood is having a bowl of ice cream, asking if I could have a second bowl, and being told no. At that moment, I made a priority for my future-adult self, and that was to have that second bowl of ice cream; I could even have ice cream for dinner if I wanted to. How nice of my childhood self to give me permission like that! Now I can’t even imagine my number one priority being how much ice cream I can consume and when, but it’s funny to think about, and even funnier when I bring it up as a way to justify having ice cream whenever I get the craving for it–I’m satisfying my inner-child, okay!?
