Guantanamo Bay to Close in the Next Year

Guantanamo Bay Guantanamo Bay prison is famous for the crime that is conducted there by the United States. It is widely known not by what it is, but what goes on there and has been criticized around the world as violating US and international detainee rights, which is very apparent since an estimated 245 men are being held at the US naval base in Cuba, most of whom have been held there for years without being charged with a crime.

President Obama is hard at work, reversing the policies that the Bush Administration have set up, including closing Guantanamo Bay for good within one years time. Obama also has executive orders to review military trials of terror suspects and to end harsh interrogations.

A draft copy of the order to close Guantanamo was obtained by The Associated Press and is quoted as saying:

“in view of significant concerns raised by these detentions, both within the United States and internationally, prompt and appropriate disposition of the individuals currently detained at Guantanamo and closure of the facility would further the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and the interests of justice.”

Remember that little thing, justice? While many Americans will delight in telling you the vast amount of freedoms America possesses and instills on its people, those same people will also delight in telling you how the treatment of alleged and potential terrorists with a vendetta against America doesn’t matter, completely forgetting what justice and freedom in America is all about.

But while the papers have been signed and the motion is being carried out by the Obama administration, they do not have all of the kinks of the Gitmo arrangement worked out. Check out this video of Keith Olbermann from MSNBC about the specifics and the skeptics.

  • Obama is already starting to do “the right things”. It should not only be closed but those who carried out torture and crimes against humanity should be brought to justice. My question is what happens to the prisoners in there? Are they now given a fair trail?
