Good post Holly. You’re right that our lifestyle is one of the main factors in getting hemorrhoids. They can especially be a scary thing to a person who is getting them for the first time. You should always go to the doctor first whenever you think you may have hemorrhoids.

But a big key is preventing them in the start, and those lifestyle choices you listed above are a good start to avoiding getting them. Another one I would add – if you need to use the restroom, use it! Don’t wait! :)

  • As much as I hate to admit it, sitting too long in front of a computer or anywhere a day can really cause Hemorrhoids… The best way to prevent it would be to move around every 30 minutes, stand up, walk around and relax. It’s great for reducing stress too, don’t you think?

Great post Holly! I’m glad you mentioned the importance of drinking plenty of water to help avoid constipation. Most people don’t realize that one of the main functions of the lower colon is to absorb water, so if you are not getting enough it can definitely put you at higher risk of becoming constipated.

  • Yes, pregnancy is one of the leading causes of hemorrhoids. It happens because pregnant women tend to live a sedentary lifestyle, especially in their later months. This of course isn’t a bad thing, it’s actually recommended to some degree to allow for some comfort and natural growth for the child/mother.

But unfortunately, it is yet another blight that women must live with in the realm of childbirth, including the pain derived from the birth process itself, of course.

Holly made nice points. One thing my doctor in India told me during my pregnancy is , this could be caused by psychological fear also. Great post on hemorrhoids. As male of the species who suffered in silence I agree that it’s an awkward subject to discuss openly. Typically, I didn’t even dare tell my wife at first! She’s a nurse and I knew she’d send me to see the doctor. :) Our 21st century lifestyle definitely doesn’t help, but I did find that natural is best when it comes to a cure for piles.
