Half the Notebook, Twice the Price

Written on January 30, 2008 by Holly · Filed under Technology

MacBook Air There has been much excitement over Apple’s newest notebook release, the MacBook Air–The world’s thinnest notebook.

With it’s undoubtedly sexy and sleek design, the biggest hype over the world’s thinnest notebook is just that–the MacBook Air so thin that it fits comfortably into a manila envelope and is estimated to be about the width of your index finger. But with a notebook that thin and it’s price of [starting at] $1800, are consumers yet again paying for the unmistakable apple logo on the back of their computers or did the new design really call for such a demand of innovative hardware that the price is justified?

Whatever the case, the MacBook Air is definitely pleasing to the eye and Apple sure did come out with a product that is guaranteed to sell just by the recent hype of the Apple name that came with the releases of the iPod and iPhone. Also, if anything else, they made jaws drop in awe with the MacBook Air’s first released commercial.

  1. You are comparing apple with oranges. Look at similarly small and ultraportables from companies that are known for their design. Simple example: Sony Vaio ultraportable weighing under 2.7 lbs with a SMALLER screen costs cool $1,999.99!

Isn’t this cheaper than that! Accept that this is not for people who buy cheap and fat Dells, it is for those who were going to buy ultraportables from Sony or else. This is actually very well priced as compared to them!

It will be much better if facts are well researched and then written.

  2. I believe that Apple has lost its way a bit lately especially with the Iphone it is all HYPE. There is no quality there really, also locking the Iphone and not letting it be sold outside the USA and select countries for the longest time was not very “friendly”, sounds kinda like some company I know…oh wait MICROSOFT.

  3. I like the MacBook Air…. however, whether it be this one or a different Mac, I can’t bring myself to justify paying more and getting less.

I know Mac has great features, but look at the specs. You can get a PC with twice the power, for half the price. I just can’t do it.

  4. I am in the market to buy a new laptop, and while the Apple is appealing, I gotta admit 1. I don’t NEED the ultra thin so therefore why pay extra for it. 2. I like the variety of software that a PC offers. The features of Macs, like better security, and a better OS just don’t make up for the lack of support on the software front.
Besides, I am too busy skiing, to care whether I have the thinnest laptop, mine spends the majority of its time in the living room.
I just want a new one, because I would like to have a work pc and a play pc

  5. It may the the “worlds thinnest notebook”, but its still a mac, which makes it absoultely worthless. You can squish a piece of poop and make it the “worlds thinnest piece of poop”, but you still got a piece of poop in the end. And yes, I hate macs.

  6. When will apple reduce the price?

  8. One word: Sexy. Mac is coming up in the game.

  9. Thanks for the post. This does look like a pretty incredible computer and I still am astonished that they were even able to create a laptop as slim as this one. However, there are definitely some downsides to it as well. The most significant drawback is the fact that it lacks a CD drive, which to me is an essential aspect of any laptop. On a more general note, I would also fear that since it is so fragile I would be more likely to break it.

  10. I do everything on my Macbook, and I thought the AIR might make a good upgrade, since I’m always on the move.

The one thing that’s stopping me is the 4200RPM hard drive. It’s just way too slow to keep up with me.

While the SSD looks attractive, it’s too much of a price hike for someone like me to consider.

In the end I’m thinking of upping to a Macbook Pro instead.

  11. I do think this is a pretty good niche for Apple to sell into. It isn’t practical - but the ultralight notebooks have never been marketed that way. They’re for people who value tech over usability - and this has that in spades.

  12. When it comes to notebooks I think you gotta go with PC, the cost is just so different. Towers is a different story.

  13. Although it looks great, I thought it lacked in features for the price. I guess some things had to be given up to make it thin…?

  14. The laptop looks very nice and is relatively cheap, but it runs on Mac OS system which is rather unpopular in many parts of the world.

  15. I’m really not into the latest technology anyhow. I tend to let it settle for a couple of years before I even consider buying (into) it (if at all).

I’d be happy with just a non-attention-seeking mac laptop.

  16. ive never use Apple notebook b4.
is Mac better than Windows or is it the other way round?

  17. I was researching the same thing when I saw this.. I can not agree more - but I am still going to look for a better source

  18. Mac Book Air is not for everybody. You need to understand, when Apple introduced this they are going after a certain group of people.

  19. I definitely agree that the MacBook Air is not for everyone - it is very beautiful though.
I gotta say the commercial is great too.

  20. I wanted to buy one but changed my mind, just wasnt willing to pay the price. Quite happy with my AMILO power book as well ;-)

  21. Bought one just a week ago. Really great machine, dont want to spend another day without my MAC

  22. As much as I like the looks of the Macbook Air, I don’t think I’d want to forgo all the features of my windows based notebook. I know, I know…windows stinks but all of the software I use for better or worse is on the windows platform. An alternative for a thin and light notebook might be the Voodoo Envy 133 when it comes out. It’s a bit thinner than the Apple but doesn’t sacrifice all the goodies that the Air does. HP helped develop it so that might be a strike against it but I’ll wait to the reviews come pouring in.

  23. Yes nice notebook sure, but I agree that this is not the right notebook for the broad mass.

  24. That sounds very expensive seen it for less. Sure has a great design but don’t think its worth the price.
