Anal toys, in my personal opinion at least, are the most challenging of all sex toys out there to pick and choose from. Just like with traditional vibrators and dildos, there are a number of different types, styles, shapes and sizes. However, for the most part you can usually bank on what size and style of toy will work for you after you’ve taken a number of different types for a ride.
After having a few different anal toys in my possession that differ greatly in style and size, and of course, pretty colors, I still feel like I am starting from the bottom of the barrel when it comes to picking out an anal toy that will work for me and what I’m looking for. I am not inexperienced with anal play–not in the least–but as far as toys go, two different toys that are the same style and similar in size and shape can feel completely different from one another.
I recently had the opportunity to review the Ripple from the wonderful, woman-owned, sex-positive sex toy shop Babeland.
The Ripple is an extremely unique anal toy. It is technically an anal probe that works and stays in place like a butt plug and feels very similar to anal beads. It packs the benefits of three uniquely satisfying sensations into one little (okay, maybe it isn’t so little) toy.
The Ripple is made by Tantus, an awesome company who hand makes all of their toys with the highest quality 100% Ultra-Premium Platinum Silicone. Tantus toys are extremely soft, phthalate-free, hypoallergenic and non-porous. The Ripple contains all of these properties and is completely body-safe, alleviating any concern one might have about sticking it anywhere.
The Ripple is available from Babeland in small and large to accommodate all people who enjoy or suspect they may enjoy anal play, regardless of their level of expertise. I received the Ripple in the large size, which measures at 5 1/4 inches in length, 4 3/4 inches insertable and also 4 3/4 inches in circumference at its widest point. It has a flared base that is large enough so you won’t have any accidents while playing with it, like it being sucked up inside of you and getting lost. That is an experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Because of its large flared base, it is also harness compatible. Sadly, i do not own a harness to test it out on and I don’t know much about them or what type to look for when finding one to accommodate this probe, but the folks at Babeland are super knowledgeable and helpful and you can contact them with any questions you may have by emailing email@example.com or feel free to reach out to them on Facebook.
The Ripple comes packaged in a standard plastic box pictured above. This is the same box that all Tantus products seem to come in. The Ripple is kept secured by a plastic casing and if you are very careful with the plastic box when removing the Ripple, it will hold up pretty durably to provide your toy with a home for safe-keeping and storage for quite some time.
This probe is smooth, soft and extremely flexible. You can literally bend it in half and even scrunch it up in your fist. Because of how soft it is, it is comfortable to insert and have in for a good period of time. Its softness does lend to one significant drawback, however. Because it will bend extremely easily, inserting the first ripple proved to be awkward and difficult and the slippery slickness of lube didn’t help my attempts. Every time I attempted insertion, the Ripple would wiggle right out of place, so you really have to work the first bulge like you would a set of anal beads, guiding it along the entire way until you get to the second bulge where you should then be able to simply push from the bottom of the base.
The Ripple’s 4 3/4 inches in circumference is delightful. It’s filling, but it won’t make those with an intermediate level of anal expertise cry or plead with their partner to stop pushing it in. There are four bulges in all on this probe, the first is incredibly easy to get in and it gradually works you up to its last bulge.
What I didn’t like about the Ripple’s size lies in the length. With its 4 3/4 inches insertable length, I found it to be uncomfortable, kind of like it was trying to probe into my esophagus. While trying to sit down with it in, I found myself constantly having to readjust myself and how I was sitting and felt that if it were just a little smaller in length, this could have been a lot more versatile in terms of long-term wear. I would not go as far as to say that the smaller size would have been a better fit, since the smaller size is also smaller in width, which was the reason I opted for the larger size. Perhaps a happy medium would have better sufficed my needs. It is also because of the excessive length of the Ripple that I have run into a potential show-stopping problem. The biggest, most monumental drawback of this otherwise delightful probe is the fact that because it reaches up into the depths of your body, it picks up and holds onto a very strong scent that is not in the least tolerable. After tireless cleaning, boiling and sanitizing, the scent is still very apparent, which is very unfortunate.
While I mention long-term wear, it is worth noting that anal probes are not meant to be worn for long periods of time, which is when butt plugs would fit our sexual demands best. The Ripple is not something that you can pop in and then go do a few hours of housework, but if you plan to have it in during times when you are moving only a moderate amount and if you don’t use a half of a bottle of lube, it can stay in place a lot better than most would suspect.
Speaking of lube, because the Ripple is made of silicone, be sure to use only water-based lube with it. Otherwise, you may end up damaging your probe. Silicone also makes it extremely easy on the sex toy owner to clean. The Ripple can be completely sanitized by being boiled or put in the top rack of a dishwasher. It can also be cleaned with mild soap and warm water or toy cleaner and dried with a clean, soft towel. One drawback of silicone is that it picks up hair, lint and fibers, so because of this, you should give it a good wash before and after every use.
All things considered, the Ripple is the closest thing to perfect in the world of anal toys that I have found to date. Regardless of its drawbacks, it is still incredibly satisfying and fulfilling.
I received the Ripple Anal Probe for review. No other compensation was received, and opinions are my own.
