Social Media for Women and Utilizing sk*rt
Written on March 6, 2008 by Holly · Filed under Business & MoneySocial media is all the rage with bloggers–and for good reason! Social media can do wonders for your blog; not only is it free advertising, but you can also connect with other, similar bloggers. With personal profiles, pictures and a place for you to schmooze about your site, social media is a great way to introduce people to what you do and to find content that you’re interested in.
There is one, definitive flaw in social media, however, and that is that most of the social media websites are more focused towards politics and more specifically, the 2008 elections, as well as technology and the majority of the users on these sites are men. So what’s a woman who is interested in social media to do? Luckily for us, there are a few woman-specific social media websites out there that appeal to just women–and one of them is sk*rt.
sk*rt is a social media platform targeted towards women. While some of the users are men and the makers of sk-rt aren’t discriminatory and claim on some of their site buttons that it is also for “the men who want to get in [women's] heads”, most of the users are women and the content is women-related. The site features a ton of categories, so whatever kind of blog you run, there will be a category for you to contribute your post under.
The best reason for women bloggers to contribute their posts to women-targeted social media websites instead of the bigger sites such as digg, is because for one, you already know that your content will be more appreciated at a website of fellow women and that the users will be interested in what you have to say, making your posts stand out and not get lost in all the usual political and technology-oriented sites such as digg. sk-rt is also a much smaller website with a more intimate reader base, so while your post probably won’t be seen by millions, it will be seen by people who are interested, which helps out your website tremendously. Who knows, maybe you will even attract other women bloggers who love your website and subscribe and because of the more intimate reader base, you can connect with these women and build potential dedicated readers.
More social media for women coming soon, sk*rt isn’t the only one embracing women bloggers, so check back soon!

Interesting… I must check this out then!!
But I agree… a lot of the sites that I’ve gone to lately seems to be focusing heavily on the election and politics for this year. Not something I’m interested in considering I’m not too political, and I’m not American. Though it does affect me to some extent, it’s still not immediate.
Destiny’s last blog post..Living in Denial
That sounds so interesting! I’ll have to give it a look-see. Yeah, I’d have to agree on seeing sites with nothing but stuff about politics. It’s starting to get old…but…I guess that’s what happens.
Sara’s last blog post..ARGH!!
I love Sk*rt but I don’t really get much if any at all traffic from it. But then again I don’t try that hard.
This is pretty interesting and sounds really for girls only. I’ll join them.
Interesting website. I will forward it to affiliates who are interested in targeting a women-niche site.
Soa’s last blog post..Logidex 5.6 Release Highlights Integration with HP SOA Systinet
This is just what I have been looking for! Thank you so much. I’ll be sticking around to see what else you find.
Interesting - just need to check it out for me socially.
Great post, and so true. Smaller, more targeted social networks offer a connection to the user that large sites such as Digg simply can’t match.
