Team Behind Hurt Locker Sues 5,000 BitTorrent Users

Hurt Locker

In one of the biggest lawsuits against individuals ever, Voltage Pictures, the team behind Hurt Locker, has filed a lawsuit against 5,000 BitTorrent users for illegal file sharing.

Hurt Locker was technically a success, winning six Academy Awards, but it was a distinct disappointment in the box office, grossing less than $17 million. Voltage Pictures sees a connection with the not-so-impressive box office numbers and the fact that the movie was leaked on BitTorrent six months before its official US release in theaters.

Did you download Hurt Locker before its release through BitTorrent and shaking in your boots? Technically, there’s nothing to worry about–yet! Voltage Pictures does not know the names of the 5,000 people they are suing, the defendants have been identified only by their IP addresses and they plan to subpoena ISPs to get the user names of those who downloaded a copy of the movie.

The suit explicitly reads:

“A defendant’s distribution of even one unlawful copy of a motion picture can result in the nearly instantaneous worldwide distribution of that single copy to a limitless number of people. … The Plaintiff now seeks redress for this rampant infringment of their exclusive rights.”
