What’s Coming to and Leaving Netflix May 2016

Fans of quirky comedies might be disappointed to see Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Clerks removed from Netflix in the next month. But the good news is that Maria Bamford’s new show, Lady Dynamite, begins streaming on May 20, and if you ask her, she’s probably not supposed to be here today, either.

Lady Dynamite
Netflix

Lady Dynamite is a “mockumentary” that, like much of her comedy career, delves into the details of her personal life — her career as a comedian and burgeoning actress; her sometimes weird, but overwhelmingly supportive relationship with her family, especially her parents; and the unique challenges she faces as a person living with a mental illness.

Lady Dynamite is the second Netflix/Maria Bamford collaboration. The first was The Special Special Special, a gleeful and oh-so-awkward 49-minute stand-up comedy show shot in Bamford’s own living room with a two person audience: her parents. Remember that weird, but overwhelmingly supportive relationship we mentioned? This is one definite example of that. If you haven’t seen The Special Special Special, we urge you to queue it up ASAP. She orders pizza and burns a batch of cookies in the middle of the show. Yes, really. We’re going to go out on a limb and say that Bamford’s parents are likely ecstatic that Lady Dynamite will feature actors portraying them instead of playing themselves.

This is the true story of a woman who loses — and then finds — her shit.

Lady Dynamite is a 12-episode half-hour comedy from Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development) and Pam Brady (South Park) starring comedian-actress Maria Bamford. Based on what she has accepted to be “her life,” the semi-autobiographical, semi-surreal series is a truthful look at the highs and lows of Bamford’s life — as an actor on the rise, during her hospitalization for bipolar disorder, and through her present life in LA, where she’s reached a middle ground and found love.

  1. Awesome list, I can’t wait to enjoy these movies with friends or with family! I miss watching most of these movies and some are movies that my kids love too!

  2. Ooh, nice updates. I don’t mind the cycle of being in and out, usually if I really like a movie or show, I would’ve watched it a dozen times already! May’s gonna be an awesome month for me and my Netflix.

  3. Omg so many great movies coming to Netflix this month!!! Can’t wait for kindergarten cop!
