Ten Things Health Care Reform Will Do for You, Now

health care

President Obama will sign the recently-passed health care bill on Tuesday and the moment he does, ten provisions will go into effect. Here is how health care reform will begin working for Americans come Tuesday.

  • Current uninsured Americans who are uninsured because of a pre-existing condition will have immediate access to insurance, although that insurance will be obtained through a temporary high-risk pool.
  • Children who are under the age of 19 will not be able to be excluded from any new insurance plans because of their pre-existing condition.
  • Adult children will be able to remain on their parents’ health insurance policy and remain dependents until the age of 26.
  • Health insurance companies will not be able to drop someone from their coverage when they get sick.
  • Prescription drug prices for seniors will be lowered, making medications more affordable and closing the “donut hole” for Medicare patients.
  • Small businesses will now be entitled to a tax credit for 2009 and 2010. This tax credit could actually wind up being as much as 50% of what was paid for employees’ health insurance.
  • Lifetime limits and annual caps on coverage will be eliminated.
  • All health care insurers must post their balance sheets on the internet as well as fully disclose their administrative costs, executive compensation packages and benefit payments.
  • Free preventative services and immunizations for all Americans.
  • Consumers will have access to an effective internal and external appeals process, giving them to opportunity and responsibility to appeal new insurance plan decisions.

House Democrats Pass Health Care Bill in 219-212 Vote

Barack Obama HCR

After 17 months of debate, compromises, negotiations, threats, more compromises and general partisan politics at play, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed in a 219-212 vote by House Democrats late last night. Shortly after the vote took place, President Obama said in his speech, “This legislation will not fix everything that ails our health care system, but it moves us decisively in the right direction.”

Not one Republican voted in favor of the health care reform bill and thirty-four Democrats joined them in their vote. It seems to be the only way that this bill passed in the House last night is because of Michigan Congressman Bart Stupak, who has been more of a speaker of and for a group of anti-abortion Democrats, had announced that they had been satisfied by the language used in the bill regarding abortion and would then vote in support of the health care reform bill. While Bart Stupak and his group of like-minded, anti-choice Democrats may be satisfied with the language used in the bill and may also be satisfied with their so-called progress in the form of President Obama signing an executive order reaffirming that the bill would maintain a “consistency with longstanding restrictions on the use of federal funds for abortion,” the signing of this order means very little and is actually being called more of a symbolic move on the president’s part. The reason for this is because the language residing within the health care reform bill does nothing to change the current federal policy, which we know as the Hyde Amendment. While the Hyde Amendment has been in effect since 1976 and in short, restricts federal funding for abortion, it must be passed every year and is not set in stone.

Democrats who supported this health care reform bill have been outspoken about the amount of pride they take in the fact that it has passed, comparing this bill to the establishment of Medicare and Social Security. After the vote, Nancy Pelosi also stated, “Today we have the opportunity to complete the great unfinished business of our country.”

The health care bill, said to come at a cost of $938 billion over 10 years and will provide coverage to an estimated 32 million American citizens who are currently uninsured and uninsurable, will be signed into law by President Obama on Tuesday.

While the price tag of the bill is stunning to see in type and has rubbed many Americans the wrong way, according to the budget office, these new costs would be more than offset by savings in Medicare and by new taxes and fees–a tax on high-cost employer-sponsored health plans and a tax on the investment income of the most affluent Americans. The bill is also being said to reduce federal budget deficits by $143 billion in the next 10 years and by $1 trillion within its second decade, which was what persuaded some of the more fiscally conservative Democrats to support this reform bill.

While the fact that the health care reform bill passed is all over the news and being talked about on all of the major news channels, a lot of American people still do not know exactly what is inside of this bill and what they have to look out for in the coming months and years in regards to their health insurance and what they do when they or their families become sick and need a doctor. This health care bill will significantly expand Medicaid in order for the government to be able to ensure coverage for Americans earning up to the poverty line, approximately just over $29,000 for a family of four.

It also cuts Medicare spending by about $500 billion through reductions in the Medicare Advantage program, although also take note that Democratic leaders have ensured the American people that these reductions will not affect service of those currently receiving Medicare.

The bill will also bike Medicare payroll takes on families who earn more than $250,000 annually. Starting in 2013, a 40% tax on insurance companies providing expensive, often-quoted “Cadillac” health plans that are valued at more than $8,500 for individuals and $23,000 for families will be enforced. Because many Democrats oppose taxing such policies, due to the fact that it would hurt union members, a compromise bill has been proposed with a new threshold for imposing the Cadillac tax, making taxable plans those plans valued at over $10,2000 for individuals and $27,500 for families. If this compromise bill were to become law, it would then not kick in until 2018.

While you may be hearing a great deal more about this bill and what it means for Americans and their families, the above points are the very core, key details of the bill. Progresso Souper You Review and Giveaway [Closed]

At the start of every new year, most of the women I know and connect with regularly openly talk about how their New Year’s resolution is to lose weight and/or to eat healthier. These are some great resolutions, especially the eating healthy one because while losing weight is a perk for a great deal of women, I whole-heartedly believe that crash dieting and the diet industry as a whole is a multi-billion dollar business for a reason, so if you do truly want to lose weight, it should be for purely health reasons, which is why eating healthy and choosing foods that will nourish you instead of just fill you is really important.

Now that we are more than a month into the new year, (by the way, can you believe that? I know I can’t!) a lot of women have been reporting on their progress with their New Year’s resolutions and if they have been able to stick to what they had planned before January 1st. I have noticed that a lot of women are increasingly strong-willed this year in the commitments they have made to themselves, nearly everyone I’ve checked up on who I had read on their blogs had made a New Year’s resolution has been sticking to it pretty phenomenally. So, for those of you who made the resolution to eat healthier and who are still on the fast-track to healthy eating, I have something really great to share with you!

I am a big, big, big fan of soup. I have been not-so blessed in the teeth department, having been diagnosed with Periodontal Disease and rapid tooth decay a few years ago after my wisdom teeth had started to push their way in. Because I am a professional blogger and also a freelance writer and web designer and developer who works from home, I have a very modest monthly income. I can pretty much cover my expenses month-to-month and that’s about it. That, coupled with the fact that I also live with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and major depressive disorder, (which I have blogged about here before,) makes it impossible for me to hold a job outside of the home, it isn’t a possibility for me to go out and get a part time job to help pay dental bills. Needless to say, this causes me a great deal of excruciating physical pain where for days at a time, I am unable to open my mouth wide enough to get most foods in it. That is when soup saves my life and the sanity I would not have after getting insanely frustrated with how big bite-sized food is.

Progresso Souper You Progresso has always been a great source of delicious and nutritious soup and they have made it even healthier than before by offering an entire product line of light soups that are all 100 calories or less! It is officially super easy to get a great and satisfying meal in your belly and help manage your weight at the same time. To celebrate their line of light soups, Progresso has launched the Souper You Debut–a contest where you can enter for the chance to win a full makeover in New York City!

To enter the Progresso Souper You Debut contest, all you have to do is go to and submit an essay (200 characters or less) telling Progresso why you love Progresso Light or 100 calorie soups and why you would like a full makeover. You will also need to submit a photo of yourself that visually reinforces the theme of your essay. Three grand prize winners will be awarded a trip for two to New York City from May 21st-23rd and includes roundtrip airfare, a two-night stay in a NYC hotel, a full makeover, a $1000 wardrobe shopping spree and personal consultation at a New York department store. Pretty fabulous if you ask me!

Review & Giveaway

To get the good word out about new Progresso Light and 100 calorie soups, I had the opportunity to try them out for myself and thanks to Progresso and MyBlogSpark, received 15 cans of Progresso Light and 100 calorie soups in a variety of different flavors, along with a Progresso soup mug and a digital jump rope that keeps track of jumps and calories burned to help you start working out more, in addition to utilizing soup to help manage your weight.

Progresso soup

The variety of soups I received is absolutely insane; I was completely blown away by the amount of different flavors offered and there is definitely something for everyone’s specific tastes. My partner, who usually despises soup and will not eat it regardless of what you bribe him with, loved the Italian-Style Meatball with Penne and I cannot get enough of the Chicken and Dumpling. I love, love, love the Progresso soup mug and now refuse to eat my soup out of anything else. It has a great little thumb indentation at the top of the handle to make carrying it from the kitchen to my computer desk very comfortable.

Milk Causes Impotence? PETA Seems to Think So

Peta impotence PETA has a very long history of promoting their vegetarian and vegan lifestyle by using very bold approaches that are often outright offensive, sexist, misogynist and above all, untrue. Yet another notch in the ‘PETA lies’ bedpost is their newest Santa Clause ad which claims that cow’s milk causes impotence.

In my (most humble) opinion, PETA is merely using scare tactics (or “kicking a guy when he’s down,” in a matter of speaking) in order to get people to pay attention. Sadly, their ‘punch in the gut’ tactics have worked, which is why we’re still seeing ads from them popping up again and again, all of them skirting right on by questionable and pushing up against insulting and this ad in particular, if you took PETA’s logo off of it, it could have been an ad for how to buy Viagra online.

There is absolutely no proof to be seen that supports their accusation that cow’s milk causes impotence and because so many of their ads and promotional techniques have been brought to question by several different reputable resources over the years, there are a great number of people who see them for who they truly are. People who are vegetarian and vegan and who would support PETA, had it not been for their “shock jock” nature, have seen through them for years and by using these types of marketing techniques and creating health risks that have no factual data supporting it to put on billboards, flyers and other marketing materials, they are alienating the same people who would otherwise support them and their cause.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Says Waiting Until Your 50’s to Get Routine Mammograms is ‘Gendercide’

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recently come out advising women that they should not get regular mammograms in their 40’s, as women have been told that they should do for quite a number of years now, and that they should wait until their 50’s. They have also advised that self breast exams do not work, therefore women should not worry about giving themselves self breast exams.

As soon as I heard about this new information I was instantly skeptical. Whose best interests are in mind here, those of women or those of the medical profession working in a recession and eager to cut as many costs as possible? After delving into the research about these new guidelines, I have determined that my initial skepticism was correct and that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force are actually now contributing to the rise of deaths due to breast cancer that will occur as soon as women start following these guidelines because they think that this “task force” has their best interests in mind and they absolutely do not. A huge amount of breast cancer survivors have been women who have noticed lumps in their breasts by doing self breast exams and women who have been lucky enough to survive breast cancer have been women who have had their cancer detected early. If these same women who are survivors of this disease were told not to worry about having frequent mammograms before the age of 50 would be dead right now and we would have even more women dying from breast cancer than ever before just by taking the advice of this so-called task force who are giving out very bad information.

For the first time in…well, probably forever, I agree completely with what Elisabeth Hasselbeck said on a recent episode of The View. Check it out below:

Enter a Wonderland of Hypnosis, Fantasy and Fetishes

Please note that the following information is intended for mature, consenting adults of at least 18 years of age or the legal age in your respective region.

Erotic fantasies are completely natural and could very well spice up your love life and satisfy you in ways that you had never anticipated before. A great deal of people are a little put off by the erotic fantasies that they have; they often have feelings of shame about them and think they are too weird to vocalize, especially if they happen to fall in the alternative lifestyle category. It could take a while for people to feel comfortable divulging their most intimate and erotic fantasies to their partners, but if you find someone that either likes the same things in the bedroom as you’ve been thinking about wanting to try or you find someone who is very willing to carry out your fantasies for you, well then you just may find yourself floating on Cloud 9.

There are many people who are very into the alternative lifestyle scene and the reason why it is called ‘alternative’ or is considered ‘underground’ is because society has not yet opened its eyes to really see that fantasy and fetishes are actually completely normal and very rewarding between consenting adults. This is also the reason why when you walk into your run of the mill sex shop, if you’re not too shy to walk into one that is, you will find a great deal of toys and sex-life-altering objects that are mostly geared towards men and what men like–lots of girl-on-girl adult films, Fleshlights, and very run of the mill sex toys for women which can be satisfying for women, but is not the end all and be all of sex toys. A lot of people want more and sex toy shops, operating within the harsh glance of society have yet to take the needs and wants of people who enjoy fantasy and fetish play seriously. It can be very difficult to find a safe space to shop in when looking for toys and gear of this caliber; a great deal of people look online because in the online world, almost nothing is off limits and you are free to explore your most intimate desires; but even a great deal of online sex toy shops are lacking in this particular category. That is why I was so pleasantly surprised to find Mind Mistress’ Transformation Castle, which is only part of an entire brand that encompasses everything you could ever want when it comes to erotic fantasy, regardless of sexual orientation or preference or gender identity.

girls-r-us Mind Mistress Linda is a professional hypnotist who has created an entire magical wonderland of delight; a space for everybody to be free to be themselves in a safe space and to either start or explore the stops on their journey to sexual discovery or fantasy. She has successfully created an outstanding adult entertainment space for the alternative lifestyle community that so very often feel that they have no space at all to truly explore their fetishes and fantasies and also discover how to become the person, practically or strictly in the bedroom, that they desire to be.

Mind Mistress’ Transformation Castle is your all-in-one, one-stop-shop for everything you could ever possibly need or want on your journey; from sexy games to play with your partner, party and holiday fantasy and sex kits, lingerie and other bedroom apparel and accessories, beauty products, lingerie, bondage wear, restraints, sex furniture, whips and paddles, sex toys, and also what just so happens to be her specialty (note her name), hypnosis CDs and DVDs.

trance Mind Mistress’ Adult Hypnotic Wishes is perhaps the most in-depth line of erotic hypnosis products I have ever seen before. You can see the passion Mind Mistress Linda has for the work that she does and the belief that every single person with a “weird, freaky fetish” should have a space that they can feel totally safe in. I commend her so much for creating such a space because while I have seen adult erotic hypnosis websites in the past, I have not seen one so dedicated to the alternative lifestyle community. She offers adult hypnosis for just about anything you have either fantasized about or have made a lifestyle of, including slave girl hypnosis which increases submissiveness in submissive women and feminized males, French maid training, slutty schoolgirl training, hypnosis training in how to become an exhibitionist, as well as many others. She has also created a line of hypnosis trainings for practical use, including weight loss and how to stop smoking. She is also available for live, one-on-one phone or in-person hypnosis trainings.

Mind Mistress Linda’s entire line of websites, hypnosis CDs, products and apparel can all be access by the Entrance to Wonderland and Wonderland is certainly the best name for what she has created. I also particularly love how right on her website, are several sections debunking hypnosis myths with all of the things people skeptical to the concept of hypnosis say when the topic arises, such as they can’t be hypnotized or that it only works on weak people and won’t on them. In Mind Mistress Linda’s Wonderland, anything is possible and available right at your fingertips and if you don’t believe her, she’ll show you how.

Tri Delta’s Fat Talk Free Week

“You look great have you lost weight?”

“You think you’re fat? Look at me.”
“That’s way too tight for her figure.”

Fat Talk Free Week We are all guilty of thinking and saying stuff like this–to our family members, to our friends and even to ourselves. We are all guilty of self-criticism when we look in the mirror and notice that the skirt that fit us perfectly and hugged our hips in all the right places last season but doesn’t go past our thighs this season. We have all thought we were too fat, we have all dieted in hopes of becoming skinnier, more attractive, the “thin ideal.”

Women have more pressure than ever right now to look attractive, to dazzle with our appearance, to wear all the right fashions and to strive to look like the women who grace the covers of magazines. This is especially true of younger women and teens who obsess over this thin ideal and who will stop at nothing to attain it. These thoughts that so often enter our brains and things people tell us, whether we have gained weight and they ask if we are under stress because of it or if we lose weight and we’re told how great we look because we shed five or ten or fifteen pounds. While we’ve undoubtedly thought this was normal, it actually has a very damaging impact on women. That is why Tri Delta has launched a five-day body activism campaign, Fat Talk Free Week.

Fat Talk Free Week (October 19th-23rd) draws attention to body image issues and the damaging impact of the thin ideal on women in society. This annual public awareness effort stemmed from Tri Delta’s award-winning body image education and eating disorders prevention program, Reflections: Body Image Program.

The supermodels and people we see on the covers of magazines are thinner than 98% of women and a great percentage of these women think that they too can look just like what they see on these magazine covers and on television and in movies, but often we see, especially on magazine covers, is an airbrushed and heavily-photoshopped appearance of that person. Not even the person being put on the pedestal of ideal weight and beauty looks like that! Tri-Delta is in pursuit of the healthy ideal, which has absolutely no bearing on our weight or size. The healthy ideal is all about our physical health, mental health and our quality of life and that is what truly matters. Tri Delta’s initiative this past week has been about eliminating fat talk and they believe that by eliminating fat talk, we can begin to change the way women think about their bodies and accept their bodies just the way they are because if you’re healthy, then why does anything else matter? Why do we care so much about the size that sits on the tags of our clothing or how other women and men may look at us and what they may think if they see us in a swimsuit or a form-fitting top or a short skirt.

Can you believe…

  • 81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat.
  • 51% of 9 and 10 year old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet.
  • Research has shown that very young girls, ages 5-7 who are exposed to Barbie, the best-selling fashion doll in the world who has unattainable and unhealthy body proportions and who if was a real person, would be too thin to menstruate, have lower body esteem and want a thinner body than they have.
  • As many as 10 million females are suffering from anorexia or bulimia. That’s more than are suffering from breast cancer.

Because it is the last day of Fat Talk Free Week, do something good for yourself today. Choose one friend or family member and discuss one thing you each like about yourself. Or start a journal of all the good things your body allows you to do. Learn how to take a compliment! The next time someone gives you a compliment, rather than objecting and saying something like “No, I’m so fat,” practice taking a deep breath and saying “Thank you.”

Fat Talk Free Week promise
